Phoenix girls soccer team falls in 4A play-in game
MOLALLA — Phoenix hung tough with eighth-ranked Molalla for much of the contest before the Indians pulled out a 3-1 girls soccer victory in a Class 4A play-in game Friday.
Phoenix, which placed sixth in the Skyline Conference, finished the season with a 3-9-2 record. Molalla is 8-5-2.
The Pirates took the lead with a Sandra Villa goal in the 20th minute. She skirted a defender, cut toward the goal and fired an opposite-post shot that found the net.
Molalla tied it in the 20th minute, and the score remained deadlocked until the Indians tallied again midway through the second half. Their final goal came with five minutes left.
“We played pretty well,” said Phoenix coach Stephanie Vandenbusch. “We have four starting freshmen, and they looked like deer in the headlights the first 15 minutes of the game. But once we settled in, the second half was pretty good.”
