GIRLS BASKETBALL: Ashland races to season-opening win

ASHLAND — There were some nerves to open the season but Ashland’s girls basketball team shook them off quickly and sprinted to a 64-36 triumph over Douglas in the season opener for both teams.

“It was a really good start for us,” said Ashland head coach Antione Perry. “We’re coming off a couple rough seasons so it was nice to get off to a good shooting start and put up some points and play some good defense.”

Capitalizing on a lot of fastbreak opportunities, senior guard Nina Munson paced the Grizzlies (1-0) with 19 points and added five assists and five steals.

“They wanted to play fast and it really kind of plays into her game and what she likes to do,” said Perry. “She’s really good with the ball and getting up and down the court, and the girls were running with her and able to get some lanes to the basket.”

Ashland sophomore Gabby Heiken helped settle her team down with six points in the first quarter as the Grizzlies (1-0) took an early 17-7 lead. Heiken had 11 of her 14 points by halftime, and finished with eight rebounds to tie junior Jayd Sollinger with team-high honors.

Sollinger also finished with 12 points.
