Crater takes first-day lead in GP tourney

GRANTS PASS — Crater advanced nine wrestlers to the champioship semfinal round and moved into first place on the opening day of the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff Tournament Friday.

The semfinals and finals are today.

Crater, led by Kellen Kerrigan at 138 pounds, scored 128 first-day points to lead second-place Grants Pass (112) and third-place Dayton (91). North Medford was in seventh place and South Medford eighth.

Kerrigan recorded two falls and “he’s doing a really good job of being aggressive and attacking,” said Comets coach Greg Haga.

Kerrigan pinned Tristin Garcin, of Lowell, in 1:52, and Mason Fischer, of Grants Pass, in 1:59.

NEWPORT INVITE: At Newport, the Phoenix girls placed sixth and the boys seventh in the Newport Invitational meet.

Heidi Taylor paced the Pirate girls with a third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:19.08 and a fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:56.81. Sophia Stubblefield was fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:43.56.

For the Phoenix boys, Nate Wood was third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.08.
