PREP ROUNDUP: Prospect girls rally to upend Gilchrist

PROSPECT — Trailing by two points heading into the fourth quarter, Prospect turned it up a notch down the stretch to secure a 36-27 comeback victory over Gilchrist in Mountain Valley League girls basketball Wednesday.

Sophomore forward Alissa Oliver paved the way for the host Cougars to earn their third MVL win of the season, scoring 20 points on 9-for-16 shooting to go with 18 rebounds and two steals.

Prospect outscored Gilchrist 16-5 in the fourth quarter to win going away.

Mckenzie Thompson added six points, 14 rebounds and five blocks while Leeanna Lands dished out five assists to go with her four rebounds for Prospect (8-16, 3-14 MVL).

For Gilchrist (7-16, 4-14), Raynee Hoover scored 11 points and Kylee McClelland added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Boys Basketball

PROSPECT 45, GILCHRIST 35: At Prospect, Gilchrist made things interesting but Prospect mustered a solid finish to secure the Mountain Valley League win.

Prospect (4-20, 3-14 MVL) led 25-11 at halftime but Gilchrist junior Jaekob Spurlock got hot in the third quarter, scoring 16 of his 22 points, to put his team on top.

Altering the defense to further deny Spurlock in the fourth quarter, the Cougars were able to push past the Grizzlies (0-23, 0-18) with a 15-6 edge in the final quarter.

Kyle Ghirardo had 13 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two assists to pace Prospect, while Theo James had nine points and 15 rebounds and Jadon Taylor added eight points and nine rebounds.


PHOENIX SPLITS: At Klamath Falls, after a slow start in a 63-15 loss to Hidden Valley, Phoenix came on strong against host Klamath Union for a 45-24 win at the Skyline Duals.

Gavin Hall and Emma Truex each won by fall and Michael Walker added a high-scoring decision to lead Phoenix against Hidden Valley.

Hall registered his pin at heavyweight to put the Pirates on the board for the first time, while Truex pinned Hunter Lucas at 126 pounds. Walker (160) outlasted Jacob Hughes for a 17-11 decision in Phoenix’s only other triumph.

Against Klamath Union, Truex registered another pin and was joined by Patrick Calhoun (152), Walker (160) and James Everett (170) in earning falls.

Jonathan Bennett scored a 12-7 decision at 220 for the Pirates.
