North Medford advanced nine wrestlers into today’s semifinal round and South Medford qualified two after a challenging first day of the Southwest Conference district championships Friday at South Medford High.
The Black Tornado stands third overall in the team race with 109.5 points, trailing Grants Pass (190) and Roseburg (180) heading into today’s final rounds. South Medford is in fifth place with 39.5 points.
Action resumes today at 11 a.m., with championship finals estimated to begin around 5 p.m. The top three wrestlers at each weight class qualify for the Class 6A state championships Feb. 28-29 at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum.

Samuel Miller, Zoller, Gutches, Roe, Ethan Miller and Fuiava each posted pins to reach the semifinals.
“They’ve all been putting in the work and that’s what it takes,” said first-year Black Tornado coach Abram Haddon of his semifinalists. “Tomorrow will be some good matches. There were a few good ones today but there’s going to be some really good matches Saturday.”
South Medford saw Chase Imus (132) and Lucas Rivera (152) pull through as the lone Panthers to reach the semifinals, with Imus scoring a major decision over North Medford’s Jace Garibay and Rivera netting a pin in 1 minute, 37 seconds over Soren Thorsen of Grants Pass.
South Medford sophomore Brayden Ostvik, who entered the district with a 31-6 record, battled cramps during his quarterfinal match and wound up falling to Roseburg’s Kaden Schlatter. Ostvik remains in contention to reach the state meet in the consolation rounds.
“We had some good, tough matches,” said first-year South Medford coach James Monroe. “Hopefully we can get these guys to come back and make it through to state.”
