PREP BASKETBALL: Ashland girls end playoff drought

EAGLE POINT — Jayd Sollinger’s sharp shooting and defensive prowess in an impressive all-around performance lifted Ashland to a 39-22 girls basketball win over Eagle Point in Midwestern League play Monday.

It was the regular-season finale for both teams.

Sollinger, a junior forward, provided 17 points, six rebounds, two blocks and nine steals to help the Grizzlies create separation in the second half.

With the victory and Thurston’s loss to Churchill on Monday, the Grizzlies (14-10, 9-7 MWL) secured the fourth and final spot for the Class 5A playoffs. They will travel to take on a team to be determined on Friday.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” said Ashland coach Antione Perry on his squad making the playoffs for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Both teams started slow offensively and the game was tied at 10-all before senior guard Nina Munson’s 3-pointer gave the Grizzlies a 13-10 halftime edge.

In the second half, Ashland picked up the tempo offensively and defensively, in large part because of Sollinger collecting steals and turning them into baskets at the other end of the floor.

“She’s very under control,” said Perry. “She can really shoot the ball and she was getting open jump shots, but I don’t think she gets enough credit defensively. She’s long and athletic, and it’s hard to dribble around her. She made things happen in the second half.”

Munson finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Kendyl Abel added eight points.

Eagle Point, which was led by Kierssa Hogan’s six points, ended its season with a 9-16 record and a 4-12 mark in the MWL.
