Prep Volleyball: Cascade Christian rallies to stay perfect
Cascade Christian’s volleyball team overcame a depleted roster and a fifth-set deficit to down Sutherlin in five sets and remain unbeaten on the season Tuesday in the Challengers’ gym.
Cascade Christian (9-0) was without five players — including four starters — because of spring break obligations and was behind 5-0 in the the fifth set before rallying for a 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 13-25, 15-12 triumph.
“We kind of pieced a couple things together and the kids did a great job of keeping the pressure on from a serving standpoint,” said Challengers coach Rob Kleker of the set-deciding 15-7 surge. “I’m not sure how many aces we had, but we had some in there to keep them out of system, and we were able to take advantage when we got the ball.”
Ania Farmer chalked up 16 kills and four aces in the win, and Ellie Harrington had 14 kills and eight digs.
Maddie Carter chipped in nine kills and eight digs, and Molly Griffin piled up 40 assists.
NORTH MEDFORD 3, ROSEBURG 2: At Roseburg, Catherine Rostel had 19 kills and 27 digs to lead North Medford to a 22-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-13, 15-13 victory.
Audrey Yechout helped the Black Tornado up its record to 7-2 with 14 kills and 30 digs, while Sara Hamlin notched 20 digs.
Matlyn Leetch filled the stat sheet with 30 assists, 11 digs and five service aces, and Emelia Thiring had five of North Medford’s 10 blocks.
Roseburg is 2-2.
DOUGLAS 3, ST. MARY’S 0: Douglas won the first two sets, then overcame a big deficit in the third to sweep St. Mary’s, 25-17, 25-20, 25-21.
The Crusaders (5-6) led 21-8 and seemed to have momentum in the third set, but the Trojans’ Makenna Anderson served points 9 to 25 to seal the match, their first win after five losses.
Senior Lucy Palmer served 12-for-12 with five aces for St. Mary’s, and freshman Emma Johnston led the Crusaders with five kills to go with two aces. Junior Kylie Kinsella chipped in two kills.
Sophomore Albie Borovansky finished with 12 digs, and sophomore Kaitlyn Hansen contributed nine assists.
