Prep roundup: South Medford tops Roseburg in five

A week ago, South Medford’s volleyball team vanquished Roseburg in three sets.

It took a little more effort on Thursday, but the Panthers got by the Indians again, 25-20, 24-26, 15-25, 25-21, 15-9 in the South Medford gym.

The Panthers (6-2) trailed two sets to one were down by four points, 20-16, late in the fourth before rallying.

“We had everybody contributing tonight,” said South Medford coach Robin Akpan. “It was a big team effort. It was our second time playing Roseburg, and it took a little more to close them out. I’m really proud of the girls to reach down deep and be able to take that step and put them away tonight.”

Tes Wente and Katie Clevenger led the way for South Medford. Wente had 16 kills and two blocks and Clevenger 14 kills and two blocks.

Evelyn Laupola chipped in nine kills, four blocks and five service aces, Kiya Jackson had five kills, three blocks and three digs and Aubrey Millar four kills, two blocks and two aces.

Baylee Davis recorded 29 assists and Alexis Deschweinitz 22, while Amanda Drane garnered 29 digs and three aces.

Roseburg fell to 2-3.

MAZAMA 3, PHOENIX 0: At Phoenix, Mazama rolled to the straight-set victory, 25-14, 25-9, 25-19.

Delani Parent led Phoenix (1-7) with seven kills, and Ally Ellis had two kills to go with 12 assists against the Vikings (5-2).

The Pirates got five kills and four aces from Madison Lewis and four kills from Josie Bolstad. Raelyssa Goff had 12 digs, and Morgan Miles contributed a perfect serving line.


NORTH EUGENE 40, PHOENIX 0: At Eugene, Phoenix suffered its third shutout in four games, dropping to 0-4.

North Eugene evened its record at 2-2.
