PREP VOLLEYBALL: Crater outlasts Roseburg in five sets
CENTRAL POINT — It took Crater a little while to get momentum, but once it was in the Comets’ favor, they never turned back Tuesday in a five-set regular-season finale comeback over visiting Roseburg.
Crater rallied to win 25-23, 25-27, 20-25, 25-16, 15-6 on senior night.
“The first three sets were obviously real close games and could’ve gone either way,” said Crater coach Megan Dunn, “but by those fourth and fifth sets, we just got that momentum and decided to take a game and take the win.”
Sophomore setter Kate Stidham accounted for 59 assists in the high-scoring affair for Crater (8-2), while senior Avery Hanson had 19 kills and four blocks and sophomore Madison Kocina added 14 kills.
Also for the Comets, senior Tessa Frodge managed 13 kills and 16 digs, senior Kylie Anderson had 27 digs and sophomore Kendra Bittle added 13 kills and four blocks.
The Comets will next play Friday in seeding matches for Saturday’s season-ending Southern Oregon Conference tournament at Crater High.
Roseburg dropped to 5-4 overall.
SOUTH MEDFORD 3, GRANTS PASS 2: South Medford battled to win the final three sets to rally for its second five-set victory over Grants Pass this spring, with the Panthers prevailing 23-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-11, 15-10 on senior night at South Medford High.
Sophomore Katie Clevenger pounded out 23 kills to go with five blocks and two aces while senior Kiya Jackson had eight kills and four blocks for South (9-3).
Evelyn Laupola (six blocks, five kills), Tes Wente (eight blocks, seven kills) and Aubrey Millar (four blocks, five kills, three aces) were strong at the net for the Panthers, and Amanda Drane added 27 digs and four aces.
ASHLAND 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Ashland, Kayla Miller notched 18 kills and three aces and Harper Wells had 18 assists as Ashland won in straight sets, 25-23, 25-19, 25-15.
Also for the Grizzlies (3-6), Maile Cooper provided 10 digs while Cameron Christian had five kills, Taylor Heie had four kills and India Hernandez added four aces.
Freshman Emma Kness had 25 digs and three aces for Eagle Point (0-10), while seniors Kierssa Hogan (five kills, 14 assists) and Chloe Pariani (nine kills) and junior Lily Bixler (four kills) also had productive nights.
PHOENIX 3, NORTH VALLEY 1: At Phoenix, Phoenix used dominant serving and dispatched North Valley, 25-18, 25-13, 20-25, 25-16.
The Pirates missed only nine serves and were led at the line by Ally Ellis’ 16 of 17, Madison Lewis’ 14 of 15 and Jourden DeVey’s 14 of 16. Lewis had five aces and DeVey four.
Raelyssa Goff had 16 digs and a kill for Phoenix (3-9), while DeVey added six kills and Lewis five kills. Ellis contributed 25 assists and a kill.
Josie Bolstad had seven kills, four stuff blocks and 14 digs.
