PORTLAND — Ashland senior Cameron Stein backed up one outstanding performance with another, winning the Rose City Invitational Championship boys cross-country race Saturday with his second straight personal record.

Stein, who will be a preferred walk-on in the University of Oregon distance program next year, won the 5,000-meter race at Rose City Golf Course in 14 minutes, 32.2 seconds, beating out runner-up Giuliano Scasso, of Ida B. Wells, who clocked 14:38.8.

South Medford’s Michael Maiorano had a strong showing of his own. The junior placed third in 14:48.2, a personal best.

The meet attracted 17 teams in the 6A and 5A divisions.

Stein led the Grizzlies — the 2019 Class 5A state champion — to seventh place with 132 points. Franklin won with 65. South Medford was eighth with 193.

Stein last week set a personal best of 14:40.6 in the Southern Oregon Regional Championships at Valley of the Rogue State Park.

Two of his teammates made top-20 appearances Saturday. Senior Reed Pryor was 17th in 15:40.4, and sophomore Nathan Stein was 18th in 15:41.8.

In the girls meet, Ashland placed fifth with 129 points.

Junior Grace Yaconelli placed 18th for the Grizzlies in 19:29.8.
