PREP ROUNDUP: Grants Pass rolls to 19-2 win over Ashland

ASHLAND — Grants Pass junior Sophie Woodburn hit a home run as part of a three-hit day and drove in four to lead the Cavers’ offense in a 19-2, five-inning softball victory over Ashland Thursday at North Mountain Park.

Grants Pass, playing its season opener, finished with 15 hits as it built a 13-2 lead after three innings.

Woodburn and sophomore Taylor Douglas both had three-hit days. Douglas, sophomore Shayelynn Totten and freshman Atianna Vainuku-Johnson all drove in three runs.

Grants Pass junior pitcher Sara Martin recorded the complete-game effort, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out eight.

Gabby Heiken drove in the Ashland (0-2) runs with a two-run double in the bottom of the first. Glory Pistole finished 2-for-3 for the Grizzlies.

GRANTS PASS 6, SOUTH MEDFORD 0: Grants Pass singles and doubles players didn’t drop a set en route to a sweep of host South Medford.

Grants Pass’ top singles player, Nicholas Rist, rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory to set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The Cavemen’s Mateo McCoy was also impressive in his 6-0, 6-1 victory over South’s Hayden Allen.

SOUTH MEDFORD 6, GRANTS PASS 2: At Grants Pass, South Medford dropped the No. 1 and 2 singles matches but claimed victory in the other six matchups for the overall team win.

The Panthers’ No. 1 team of Emerie Doell and Sarah McAllister defeated Allison and Lauren Robinson, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, South’s Makayla Peterson and Ara Mathis downed Elise Crowson and Kayla Feskens, 6-3, 6-2.

Molly Milligan accounted for the Black Tornado’s singles victory, downing Zoe Zapf, 4-6, 6-4 (10-8).

In doubles, Hadley Dunlevy and Jade Yang notched North’s second win, topping Sachi Moran and Harper Wells, 6-1, 6-3.

ST. MARY’S 4, PHOENIX 0: St. Mary’s evened its season record at 1-1 with the victory over a young Phoenix team at Bear Creek Park.

Hannah Poisson won at No. 1 singles for the Crusders, topping Ally Ellis, 6-4, 6-1, and the top doubles tandem for St. Mary’s, Jessica Traynnor and Pratheeka Weerakoon, won 6-1, 6-1 over Courtney House and Gowri Vellanki.

In its season-opening match Wednesday, St. Mary’s fell to Klamath Union, 6-2.
