PREP ROUNDUP: Crater boys, South girls earn narrow wins

South Medford and Crater went down to the wire in the boys and girls track and field meets Wednesday at South Medford High, with less than 10 points deciding each dual.

Using a pair of individual wins by Gabriel Williams and Walker Dorris, Crater’s boys team was able to secure a nine-point win over the Panthers, 71.5-62.5, while South Medford’s girls team got two wins apiece from Brooke Fairbanks and Morgan Burke to eke out a 69-64 triumph.

Dorris swept the hurdles events for the Crater boys, winning in 16.84 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 46.68 in the 300 hurdles. Williams won the shot put with a 43-foot toss and the discus in 120-11.

South Medford’s boys team saw Andrew Walker sweep the sprints with wins in the 100 (11.38) and 200 (23.41) and join Garrett Henderson, Benjamin Krebs and Kalem Gartin in winning the short relay (46.44).

On the girls side, Fairbanks scored close wins in the 100 (13.31) and 200 (27.17) and Burke swept the hurdles with times of 16.44 in the 100 hurdles and 51.06 in the 300 hurdles.

Allison Waters had a standout day for the Crater girls, winning the shot put (31-10) and discus (91-4) and running a leg on the winning 4x100 relay squad (57.55) that included Cambrea Goodwin, Bailee Dawson and Katelyn Gailey.

NORTH SWEEPS: North Medford won all but three events on the boys side and four on the girls side to sweep a dual meet with Ashland, 109-30 in boys and 78-40 in girls, at Bowerman Field.

Aidan Vanderhoof won both boys hurdles events and ran a leg on the winning short relay for the Black Tornado, while Colby Neron unleashed an impressive throw of 182-6 in the javelin and Isaac Chavez swept the long and triple jump events.

Kira Pyka won both sprints for the North girls and was part of the winning 4x100 relay squad, while Hannah McFarland won the discus and javelin for the Tornado.

Ashland’s Mary Sophia Cellini also scored a pair of wins in the 300 hurdles (53.95) and triple jump (28-9) and was on the winning long relay team.

GP SWEEPS: At Grants Pass, the Grants Pass boys and girls track and field teams combined to win all but three events in a dual meet against Eagle Point.

Grants Pass outscored Eagle Point 105-22 on the boys side, while the Caver girls were victorious 100-13.

Grants Pass’ Devik Chiang and Noah Martinez were each victorious in three different events, while Tatianna Ross duplicated the feat on the girls side with wins in both sprints and a leg in a 4x100 relay team that finished in 51.19 seconds.

Eagle Point’s John Shawnego won the 200 (23.52) while the Eagles swept both javelin events thanks to Austin Strawn (173-5) and Makynlee Schauffler (78-0).

PHOENIX BOYS PLACE SECOND: At Murphy, the Phoenix boys got strong showings in the distance and field events to finish second out of five teams at Hidden Valley High School.

Hidden Valley won both the boys and girls meets. The Phoenix boys were second with 43 points, while the girls recorded 12 points and came in third.

Phoenix’s Noah Marshall won the boys 800 with a time of 2:06.4, while Elwood Hosking (4:23.41) and Dilan Mathieu (9:59.19) captured wins in the 1,500 and 3,000, respectively.

Fa Luafulufa Masalosalo won the shot put and discus for Phoenix.

On the girls side, Kyla Potratz won the 800 for the Pirates’ lone event win.

Baseball

PHOENIX 15, NORTH VALLEY 1, 5 inn.: At Merlin, senior Brandon Zanni was lights out again on the mound and got plenty of support from his offense in Phoenix’s blowout win over North Valley.

Zanni struck out nine and walked one without allowing an earned run in four innings for the Pirates (4-0). He was also one of five Phoenix players to finish with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Zanni’s battery-mate, Martin Scala, also went 2-for-4, with his two-run double with one out in the third sparking a seven-run surge.

Ian Wood finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while both Ethan Humble and Trystan Norris went 2-for-4 and drove in a run. Eli Page also collected two hits for Phoenix.

Softball

PHOENIX 12, NORTH VALLEY 0, 5 inn.: At Merlin, Raelyssa Goff supplied a two-run triple in a nine-run third inning and also limited North Valley to one hit in the mercy-rule triumph.

Goff struck out nine, walked none and hit one batter in improving to 3-0 for the Pirates (4-0), with her lone hit allowed coming on a second-inning bunt for a single by Ashlyn Godfrey.

Morgan James added a two-run double and Jayden Vos had an RBI double to highlight the third-inning outburst.

Goff finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Vos was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Addison Brite went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Kassandra Skaff was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
