North athletes to sign with colleges Friday
Four North Medford senior athletes will sign letters of intent to compete collegiately during ceremonies Friday at the school.
Soccer players Taylor Denn and Sophie Elam are headed to Abilene Christian University and Cal Tech University, respectively; baseball player Gavin Schmidt will sign with Sonoma State University; and softball player Neveah Smith plans to ink with Portland State University.
Denn led the Black Tornado in goals the past two seasons, scoring 10 as a junior and seven as a senior. A four-year varsity player, the midfielder was first-team all-conference her final two years, was second team as a sophomore and honorable mention as a freshman.
Elam, a defender and midfielder, was second-team all-conference as a senior and was a three-year varsity player.
Schmidt is a third baseman and pitcher. He’s hitting .357 through five games this spring, with five RBIs and two runs. On the mound, the right-hander is coming off a one-hit shutout of Ashland this past Saturday, where he struck out seven in a complete-game effort during the 5-0 triumph.
Smith, an outfielder, has yet to play this spring following an elbow procedure. She is expected to return soon. For her career, the leadoff hitter has a .548 on-base percentage, .440 batting average, 33 runs and 18 stolen bases.
