PREP ROUNDUP: Hot bats push North past Crater
CENTRAL POINT — North Medford set the tone with a big first inning and defeated Crater, 12-2 in five innings, in Southern Oregon Conference baseball action Thursday at Anhorn Field.
North (4-2), which had 11 hits, scored five first-inning runs to get a leg up, and pitcher Tre Newmann limited the Comets (3-6) to three hits.
The Black Tornado’s first five hitters of the game reached base, with Johnny King recording the first of his two bunt singles, Jeremiah Robbins dropping a run-scoring single into center field and Gavin Schmidt rifling a two-run single to center.
North scored four runs in the fifth to bring the mercy rule into play. Frankie Rutigliano rapped an RBI double to left-center, Cody Borraggine hit a two-run single up the middle and Koda Passey scored on a fielder’s choice.
Aiden Horsley rapped two triples for North, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Borraggine had three runs and two RBIs, and Robbins and Schmidt each drove in two. King was 2-for-4 with two runs and Tyler Dunlevy 2-for-3.
Two of Crater’s hits were singles by Caleb Randolph and Dawson Douglas in the second inning, when the Comets scored their runs. Jared Weber got the lone RBI with a bases-loaded walk, and Brandon Tibbils had the team’s other hit.
Newmann struck out five, walked three batters and hit three.

CRATER 4, NORTH MEDFORD 3: At Central Point, Alyssa Kilbane hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Crater in the SOC contest.
The Comets’ Kailee Davis had reached on an error and scored the winning run.
Crater is 4-5 and North is 4-3.
Kilbane was 2-for-4 with the RBI, and Maddie Sheadel drove in two runs for the Comets, who managed five hits off Black Tornado starter Alyssa Hartzheim.
Caitlyn Warner got the victory for Crater with three innings of relief. She allowed three hits, one run, struck out one and didn’t walk any.
Presley Lawton was a force at the plate for the Tornado, hitting a two-run home run in the sixth inning to forge a 3-3 tie, and rapping an RBI single in the first in a 2-for-4 day.
Matlyn Leetch was 2-for-4 for the Tornado.

Track and Field
GRANTS PASS SWEEPS NEWLAND INVITE: Grants Pass swept the team standings at the Bob Newland Invitational, getting quality showings in a field of sophomores and freshmen at South Medford High.
South Medford’s Andrew Walker won the 100 and 200 meters, recording times of 11.17 and 23.16 seconds, both of which were personal records.
The Panthers’ also captured wins in the girls sprints, with freshman Brooke Fairbanks claiming the 100 and 200 with personal-best times of 12.85 and 26.88.
The Ashland boys swept the distance races with Nathan Stein (4:52.20) and Canyon Lowes (10:46.64) recording wins in the mile and 3,000, respectively.
North also swept the distance races on the girls side, with Estella Gutches (5:40.53) winning the mile and Reese Meager (12:28.55) taking the 3,000.

At No. 1 singles, Ashland’s Zoe Zape rallied to defeat South Medford’s Maggie VonStrahl, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 13-11.
The Grizzlies’ top doubles team of Sofia Shelton and Talia Vivrett downed Emerie Doell and Sarah McAllister, 6-0, 6-7 (2-7), 10-8.

The Crusaders’ Jessica Tryanor triumphed at No. 1 singles, topping Makenna Dunn, 8-2.
No. 1 doubles went to the St. Mary’s tandem of Mia and Sofia Castillo, 8-3 over Lily Preszler and Dunn.
The Challengers’ victory came at No. 4 singles, where Carly Casey defeated Mergan Lopiano, 8-6.

The Challengers’ No. 1 doubles team of Brandon Parker and Owen Harrington claimed the 8-5 win with pro-set scoring.
Cascade’s other doubles team of Seth Thomas and Bryson Cannon secured the win with an 8-2 victory.
Harrington and Cannon also won their singles matches.
