PREP ROUNDUP: Vanderhoof, Boutwell bag two wins each

CENTRAL POINT — North Medford’s Aidan Vanderhoof and South Medford’s Jaeda Boutwell each won two individual events Saturday as the Southern Oregon Conference district track meet wrapped up at Crater High.

Grants Pass won both the boys and girls team titles. The boys scored 193 points, while North Medford was second with 144. The Caver girls tallied 205 points, beating out North Medford (129) and South Medford (128).

Vanderhoof won the 400 meters in a personal-record 49.52 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 39.83, another PR.

He also ran on the Black Tornado’s victorious 4x400 relay with Grant Lulich, Nathan Rider and Danny Cossette. The time was 3:31.15.

Rider added a victory of his own in the 200 in a PR of 21.87 seconds, and he was second in the 100 in 11.05, another best.

Crater’s Tyrone Gorze made it 3-for-3 this week, crossing the finish first in the 1,500 in 3:58.67.

On Friday in the 5A state meet in Wilsonville, Gorze set the all-time Oregon 1,500 record for sophomores, and on the first day of the SOC meet Thursday, he won the 3,000 race.

Boutwell captured the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 15.11, and won the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.

Two Panther teammates brought home firsts as well: Katie Clevenger in the 400 with a PR of 59.57 and Morgan Burke in the 300 hurdles in a season-best 48.26.

North Medford’s girls had three victors.

Like Gorze, Estella Gutches followed her 3,000 win on Thursday with a triumph in the 1,500 in a PR of 4:52.83.

Cammeo Ramirez took the gold in the 1,500 in a PR of 2:25.68, and Audrey Yechout claimed the triple jump with a leap of 32-8 3/4.

MAIORANO SETS PR: At Oregon City, South Medford junior Michael Maiorano placed sixth in a fast 1,500 meters, but he set a personal record in the 6A Showcase meet at Pioneer Stadium.

Maiorano ran 3 minutes, 53.85 seconds, improving on his previous best of 3:56.51. Mateo Althuose of Lincoln won in 3:51.16, a Class 6A season best.

The quick pace produced personal records for the first 12 placers.

5A STATE MEET: At Wilsonville, Eagle Point senior Austin Strawn placed second in the javelin to complete the season.

Strawn, who won the state championship as a freshman in 2018 and was second in 2019, got off a best throw of 181 feet, 10 inches.

Pendleton’s Samuel Jennings won with a mark of 190-0.

Eagle Point’s Wyatt Angel was eighth at 154-9.

Saturday’s portion of the two-day meet was reserved for field events.

Ashland placed fifth in the boys with 46 points. Churchill won with 92.

4A STATE MEET: At Florence, Phoenix’s Elwood Hosking placed second in the boys 1,500, and on the girls side, Kyla Potratz added a fourth place to her two-day haul.

Hosking ran a personal-best 4:07.05, coming in behind Philomath winner Brody Bushnell, whose time was 4:04.02.

Potratz, runner-up in the 3,000 the day before, turned in a PR of 5:04.48 in the 1,500.

2A STATE MEET: At Union, freshman Susan Smith finished in or near the top 10 in three girls events for Rogue River, recording personal bests in each.

Smith placed sixth in the 200 in 28.39 seconds, 11th in the 400 in 1:06.59 and ninth in the javelin with a throw of 97-9.

Teammate Ayrica Hansen placed eighth in the long jump at 14-5.

In the boys meet, the Chieftains’ Samuel Haag was 13th in the long jump at 17-0 1/2.

Boys Basketball

NORTH MEDFORD 63, SUMMIT 49: Landon Ellis made a key three-point play down the stretch as host North Medford fended off a challenge from Summit, which closed to within four points in the final period.

Ellis scored 16 points to share team-high scoring honors for the Black Tornado (3-0) with Trey Neff. Ellis had four assists and Neff three.

North Medford’s Bryce Dyer scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Summit is 1-2.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 58, DAYS CREEK 20: Braydn Coppedge led a balanced scoring attack and Cascade Christian held visiting Days Creek to single-digit scoring in three quarters.

Coppedge scored 11 points and had seven rebounds for the Challengers (2-0). They also got 10 points from Morgan Law and nine each from Matt McPheeters and Austin Maurer, who added eight blocks and eight rebounds.

Cascade Christian limited Days Creek (1-2) to two points in each of the first and fourth quarters.

KLAMATH UNION 65, ST. MARY’S 37: At Klamath Union, Klamath Union outscored St. Mary’s 19-5 in the first quarter and held the Crusaders to five points in the third.

Three players led St. Mary’s (2-1) with eight points each: Kayden Walker, Luke Bennion and Eli Haynes.

It was Klamath Union’s season opener.

KLAMATH UNION 44, ST. MARY’S 42: At Klamath Falls, Ryker Rothfus scored eight of her 14 points in the first quarter to get St. Mary’s off to a fast start but the Crusaders fell behind in the third quarter and were held at bay by Klamath Union.

Morgan Dole had 15 points to lead St. Mary’s (0-3), knocking down two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

McKenzie Probst scored 15 to lead the Pelicans (1-0).

Wrestling

CENTRAL OREGON OFFICIALS TOURNAMENT: At Sisters, Eagle Point and North Medford each came up short in a pair of duals in the 21-team dual-meet event at Sisters High School.

Ridgeview edged the Eagles 36-33 in Pool C competition before Eagle Point suffered a 72-6 loss to Mountain View.

Marc Milazzo scored EP’s lone win against Mountain View with a pin of Elliot Smith in 62 seconds at 220 pounds, while Luke Patterson (120), Luke Callahan (126), Dylan Dahling (138), Kenai Copeland (145) and Juan Ruiz (182) registered pins against Ridgeview and Kyle O’Neil (170) won by decision.

North Medord lost 30-22 to Bend in Pool A despite pins from Evan Reyes (138) and Brett Rucker (182) and a 17-4 major decision by Jace Garibay (145).

Crook County topped the Black Tornado 72-3 after Jeremiah Jackson was able to secure North’s only win with a 7-5 decision over Hayden Hilderbrand at 220.
