South coach Singler earns regional award

South Medford's Bill Singler

South Medford coach Bill Singler was honored recently as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Northwest sectional football coach of the year.

Singler’s honor came during an Oregon Athletic Coaches Association (OACA) banquet to recognize award winners for 2020.

The Northwest sectional includes schools in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.

Singler started his run as South Medford High football coach in 1998, and guided the Panthers to a Class 6A runner-up showing in 2017. This past season, he led South Medford to a 4-1 record.

Also earning a sectional coach of the year honor was Hidden Valley girls soccer coach Dennis Hart.

Local OACA coach of the year honors for 2019-20 went to South Medford’s Tom Cole (6A girls basketball), Ashland’s Hans Voskes (5A boys cross country), St. Mary’s Kevin Klabunde (4A/3A/2A/1A girls golf), St. Mary’s Joe Volk (3A boys track and field, 3A girls track and field) and Hidden Valley’s Terry Larson (4A girls track and field).

The 2019-20 OACA all-sports winners were Jesuit (6A), Crescent Valley (5A), Marist Catholic (4A), Catlin Gabel (3A), Kennedy (2A) and St. Paul (1A).
