Eagle Point’s Lopez captures 5A state title

COTTAGE GROVE — Eagle Point freshman Tygren Lopez entered the final wrestling meet of the season with all of one loss to his name. And he’s leaving in the same way.

Lopez, wrestling in the 113-pound weight class, captured the state title with an 11-8 decision over Thurston’s Braylin Ruchti at the Oregon Wrestling Association’s Class 5A state championship tournament Saturday at Cottage Grove High.

Lopez was one of two area wrestlers to advance to the championship finals, with Crater’s Kabb Christensen reaching the finals at 170 after beating Hillsboro’s Adonai Peraza-Nava with a pin in 1 minute, 46 seconds.

Christensen lost to Crescent Valley’s Jackson Rosado in the finals on an 18-9 major decision.

Lopez, who won his two matches Friday via pin and a 16-3 major decision in the quarterfinals, advanced to the final round with a pin of St. Helens’ Gavin Schaer in 3:16.

Lopez finished the 2021 season with a 13-1 record.

At 160 pounds, Eagle Point’s Kyle O’Neil finished third with a 6-3 decision against Ethyne Reid of Ridgeview. His Eagle Point teammate Diego De La Cruz placed fifth at 106.

Crater’s Jimmy Jordahl wound up fourth after he suffered a third-period pin in the semifinals and later lost out on third in a tight battle won 8-6 by Konrad Hoyer of Crescent Valley.

A trio of Comets were fifth in their respective weight classes with placing victories: Matthew Bolanos (145) pinned Crescent Valley’s Mario Settersten in 3:00; Brayden Gray (152) won via pin in 1:37 over Wyatt Anickeer of Scappoose; and Ethan VanHook (195) scored a 9-8 decision over Abraham Tinajero of Hood River Valley.

Crater just missed out on a top-four trophy by finishing fifth overall with 110 points, while Eagle Point was eighth with 70.

CLASS 6A: At Newberg, North Medford senior Jeremiah Jackson finished fourth at 220 after falling in the third-place matchup to Alec Love of Newberg to conclude action at the OWA culminating week tournament.

Love recorded a pin in 2:34.

South Medford’s Brayden Ostvik came in sixth (120) to pace the Panthers, falling to Josef Miner of Grants Pass in the quarterfinal round of the consolation bracket with a pin in 2:12.

Miner, a senior, wound up third when he edged Cleveland’s Elija Fishler, 4-3.

Grants Pass junior Ryan Johnston finished fifth at 160 behind a 5-1 decision over Abraham Dejesus of Reynolds, and Logan Burden also was fifth for GP at 285 with a 15-4 major decision over Samiu Letisi of Salem.

CLASS 4A: At Turner, Phoenix saw all three of its remaining wrestlers come up short in their consolation matches to open Saturday and subsequently were eliminated prior to the OWA placing rounds.

Marcelo Camargo (170), Patrick Calhoun (182) and Joseph Baynard (220) each lost on Day 2.

Baynard, who was the lone Pirate to reach the quarterfinal round, suffered a 3-2 loss to Sweet Home’s Jake Fanning, while Camargo fell 9-6 to Rephael Mauck of Banks and Calhoun was pinned in 2:41 by Sweet Home’s Charlie Crawford.

Sweet Home cruised to the team title with a 95-point edge over runner-up La Grande.

CLASS 2A/1A: At Sweet Home, Rogue River senior Daniel Herinckx advanced to the championship finals at 285 but was pinned by top-seeded Kenneth Johnson of Toledo at the end of the first period to finish second overall.

Herinckx, seeded second, advanced to the finals with a pin of Culver’s Wylie Johnson in 4:33.

Michael Miller of Illinois Valley won the state title at 106 with a 48-second pin of Culver’s Aiden Guest, and Ryan Martinho of IV placed third at 152.

Culver was the only team to score in triple digits and rolled to the team title with 231.5 points.
