PREP ROUNDUP: Ashland’s Stein paces locals at Ash Creek

MONMOUTH — Ashland junior Nathan Stein held his own against top-flight cross-country competition Saturday, placing 13th to be the top finisher from the Rogue Valley in the Ash Creek XC Festival.

Stein covered the 5,000-meter course at the Ash Creek Preserve in 15 minutes, 44.20 seconds.

Tualatin senior Caleb Lakeman was the top boys finisher with a time of 14:58.50, followed by Jesuit junior Jacob Nenow (15:07.20).

Phoenix senior Elwood Hosking paced his team by placing 41st in 16:32.60 as the Pirates finished 24th as a team.

In other local marks, Ashland senior Luke Seeley finished 64th (17:15.00) and junior Finley Taylor was 95th (17:55.60).

Ashland’s girls team placed 11th out of 23 teams and Phoenix was 17th.

Ashland senior Grace Yaconelli paced the local girls by finishing 30th in 19:59.10, with Phoenix standouts Sophia Stubblefield (38th, 20:12.20) and Kyla Potratz (46th, 20:26.70) not far behind.

Ashland’s Annika Wells (73rd, 21:31.80) also fared well for the Grizzlies.

Jesuit senior Chloe Foerster was the top girls finisher in 17:24.50.

ASHLAND 3, WILLAMETTE 0: At Ashland, senior Amelia Evans paced Ashland with 14 kills as the Grizzlies rolled to a win in straight sets over Midwestern League foe Willamette at Mountain Avenue Gym, 25-14, 25-17, 25-13.

Junior outside hitter Cameron Christian recorded seven kills and 11 digs for the Grizzlies (3-1 MWL). Evans also had a pair of blocks, while senior Harper Wells added six aces.

In its three wins this season, Ashland has yet to drop a set.
