South Medford’s Connor Singer and Ashland’s Grace Yaconelli each claimed first place Wednesday at the Pear Picker Challenge, a 5,000-meter race at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park.

Singer, who clocked a time of 16 minutes, 28.4 seconds ran to the finish line alongside South senior teammate Michael Maiorano, who clocked a time of 16:28.8.

Cascade Christian’s Jake Sorani finished in 16:46.7 to take third place, while South Medford’s Adam Cannon (16:59.6) and Chase Wallace (17:56) rounded out the top-5 finishers.

Yaconelli, a senior, led the girls race by a comfortable margin, clocking a time of 20:05, more than a minute faster than the rest of the field.

North Medford’s Saundra Parsons finished second in 21:24 and Crater’s Emma West was third in 21:27. Crater’s Lindsay Siebert (21:48.3) and Ashland’s Annika Wells (22:07.8) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Pear Picker Challenge is held to honor the history of Medford schools and the Pear Picker mascot that was used by some Medford High School teams in the 1930s, according to North Medford coach Piet Voskes.

In keeping with that Medford school history, Voskes said team scores in the meet were combined into groups among the seven schools, including the combination of North Medford and South Medford.

“So for the first time since 1985 there is a Medford High team score in a sport,” Voskes noted.

Ashland and Crater were also combined as a team score, in addition to the trio of Grants Pass, Brookings-Harbor and Cascade Christian.

On the boys’ side, North and South won the team scoring with 41 points, followed by Ashland-Crater (82) and the GP-Brookings-Cascade trio (132).

The Ashland and Crater girls had a combined 37 points to claim first in the team scoring, followed by the trio (119) and the Medford schools (131).
