PREP ROUNDUP: Sorani paces field at Goodell meet

Cascade Christian senior Jake Sorani seized the moment Saturday to claim the boys cross-country title in the Stan Goodell “Legend” Invitational at Valley of the Rogue State Park.

Typically having to outrace the likes of Crater star Tyrone Gorze or South Medford’s Michael Maiorano — two of the top cross-country runners at the 5A and 6A levels, respectively — Sorani found clear sailing Saturday and a spot atop the podium to reward his efforts.

Sorani finished in 16 minutes, 33.80 seconds to easily finish ahead of runner-up Quaid Petronella of Grants Pass (16:48.70) and Elwood Hosking of Phoenix (17:06.90) on the 5,000-meter course.

Crater freshman Tayvon Kitchen placed ninth (17:43) to help the Comets finish third overall in the team race behind champion Grants Pass and Hidden Valley.

North Medford, which had Trent Wayman (18:24.60) and Alec Winters (18:27.80) place 16th and 17th, respectively, finished fourth as a team.

In the girls race, North Medford junior Estella Gutches put in a good charge but couldn’t quite overcome Madison Wilt of Grants Pass, who won in 19:15.60.

Gutches finished second at 19:50.60, while teammates Saundra Parsons (fifth, 20:04.10), Reese Meager (seventh, 20:26.90) and Eleanor Nichol (ninth, 20:53.90) weren’t far behind.

With that grouping, the Black Tornado was able to tie Grants Pass for the girls team title with 35 points.

Phoenix junior Kyla Potratz finished eighth (20:44.90) and St. Mary’s senior Addie Jensen was 14th (22:12.60).
