For all of Victor Martinez’s talents, the Phoenix senior was the first to make sure everyone realized that the Pirates boys soccer team was far from a one-man show this season.

The Skyline Conference coaches certainly agreed with that assessment, albeit with a special nod to Martinez during recent all-conference voting.

Martinez was one of a league-high four Phoenix players selected to the all-Skyline first team and also netted top honors as the Skyline Conference boys soccer player of the year for a second straight season.

A playmaking forward and midfielder for the Pirates, Martinez scored nearly half of his team’s 75 goals this fall to wrap up a stellar four-year run at the school. Martinez collected 30 goals and two assists this fall after netting 24 goals in 12 games during the spring season.

Joining him on the Skyline first team were teammates Jorge Mejia, Caden Gallegos and Danny Palomino.

Mejia scored seven goals with nine assists this past season, while fellow senior Gallegos recorded eight goals and 15 assists and Palomino contributed two goals and five assists for Phoenix.

Lupe Gonzales was named Skyline boys soccer coach of the year after guiding Henley to the league title, one game ahead of the runner-up Pirates.

In Skyline girls soccer voting by the coaches, junior Sophia Rodriguez scored the top local honors with a second-team selection.
