Three locals earn first-team FWL acclaim

Challengers’ Carter, Todd joined by Crusaders’ Dunn on all-league list

Cascade Christian’s youth movement in volleyball this season proved to be a successful venture, with the Challengers earning a share of the Far West League regular season championship and trip to the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

Leading the charge were sophomores Maddi Carter and Maddie Todd, and the Challengers duo recently was rewarded for their efforts with first-team selections in all-league voting by the FWL coaches.

Carter, a 5-foot-8 outside hitter, averaged 18.5 kills per match during FWL play and finished with 378 kills overall to go with 205 digs and 61 aces. Beyond her conference honors, Carter also earned a spot on the 3A all-state second team.

Todd, a 5-8 outside hitter/middle blocker, averaged 9.2 kills per match in league. She posted 168 kills, 174 digs and 34 aces overall with a 92.2 serving percentage. Like her teammate, Todd also received all-state recognition with her third-team nod.

St. Mary’s junior Kelsey Dunn, a 6-3 middle blocker, helped the Crusaders place third in the FWL and also earned first-team recognition.

Dunn posted 248 kills with 287 stuff blocks, 70 digs and 33 aces to pace St. Mary’s. She hit .299 for the season with an 83.7 serving percentage for the Crusaders.

Sutherlin shared the MWL title and won a league playoff with Cascade for the FWL’s top seed to state, and then finished runner-up at the 3A state tournament.

The Bulldogs swept the top FWL honors with offensive player of the year (Mallory Turner), defensive player of the year (Haley Smoldt) and setter of the year (Tianna Murphy).

Cascade Christian’s Rob Kleker was chosen as FWL coach of the year.
