St. Mary’s sweeps top soccer honors

Rothfus, Kranenburg earn District 5 player of the year honors

St. Mary’s senior Ryker Rothfus proved to be a do-it-all performer for the Crusaders girls soccer team, securing each opponents’ focus, and garnered deserving recognition for her play after recent District 5 voting by the conference’s coaches.

From her striker position, Rothfus was able to net 12 goals and contribute six assists for St. Mary’s this past season. For her efforts, Rothfus was named District 5 girls soccer player of the year honors, as well as a spot on the Class 3A/2A/1A all-state first team.

That effort proved to be one of several for the Crusaders, who also saw junior Katelynn Balsiger receive the District 5 nod as girls soccer goalkeeper of the year. Balsiger allowed only one goal in league play and 24 all season with three shutouts on her way to honorable mention all-state recognition.

Also scoring first-team all-District 5 honors for St. Mary’s were senior Brennan Gangnes, juniors Sadie Glaser and Reese Wright and sophomore Elise Fernandes.

Gangnes scored four goals with six assists as a midfielder while Glaser and Wright helped control ball possession and the overall defensive effort. For her efforts, Wright also earned a second-team all-state selection.

Fernandes led St. Mary’s in scoring with 13 goals to go with three assists.

Across town, Cascade Christian senior Katie Erno and juniors Autumn Murray and Bella Williams each earned first-team all-District 5 honors for their efforts in leading the Challengers, who did not keep formal statistics for the season.

In his first year, Cascade Christian’s Jonathan Hillis was named the league’s girls soccer coach of the year.

In District 5 boys soccer voting, St. Mary’s sophomore Chris Kranenburg was named player of the year and also earned a spot on the Class 3A/2A/1A all-state honorable mention list. Kranenburg, a forward, scored 10 goals and added six assists this past season.

Senior defender Travis Johnson was a first-team District 5 selection and honorable mention all-state choice for the Crusaders.

Rogue Valley Adventist sophomore Aaron Wilson also earned special dual honors, receiving the nod for District 5 boys soccer goalkeeper of the year to go with an honorable mention all-state selection. Wilson posted 34 saves for the Red Tail Hawks.

RVA’s other multiple honoree was senior Alex Wiggers, who earned first-team acclaim in District 5 and an honorable mention all-state nod after leading his team with 14 goals and eight assists.

Also earning first-team all-league acclaim for St. Mary’s were sophomores Leo Cronk, Yejun Choi and Ben Lee, and Rogue Valley Adventist also saw seniors Bryce Perry, Ian Cheshire and Kyle Wilson named to the first team.

Perry had 12 goals and 10 assists and Cheshire added four goals for the Red Tail Hawks. For the Crusaders, Cronk contributed five goals and six assists, Choi had two goals and three assists and Lee dished out two assists.

Eisa Tia Tutu of St. Mary’s and Jonnathon Alvarez of Rogue Valley Adventist shared recognition as District 5 boys soccer co-coaches of the year.
