PREP BASKETBALL: Tornado rallies past Lakers

LAKE OSWEGO — Despite falling behind by double-digits in the third quarter, North Medford’s boys basketball team was able to claw back for a key 57-53 road victory Wednesday night.

Ty Neff and Antonio Orozco each had 13 points and made clutch plays in the fourth quarter to help the Black Tornado (2-1) outscore the host Lakers 16-6 in the final frame.

“We just kept grinding,” said North Medford head coach Scott Plankenhorn. “In the third quarter we came out lackluster but we just kept fighting and kept fighting. In the fourth quarter we were able to space the floor and Orozco had a couple big buckets with a 3 and another shot in the paint and Ty hit a big 3 to keep us going.”

North Medford senior Bryce Dyer added 11 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. With North holding a three-point edge and three seconds to play, the Tornado was able to get an inbounds pass to Dyer and he went 1-for-2 from the foul line to seal the outcome.

As a team, however, the Tornado was an uncustomary 4-for-18 from the free-throw line overall but made up for it by going 23-for-49 from the field, including 7 of 19 from 3-point range.

We struggled at the free-throw line but we were able to make a couple at the end,” said Plankenhorn.

O’Shea Miller also chipped in 10 points, while Trey Neff had four assists and Orozco had three assists.

Max Archambo had 16 points and Carson Reno added 12 to lead the Lakers (0-1).

“It’s a big, big win for us,” said Plankenhorn, whose team was coming off a road loss at Beaverton. “We kind of needed it. We’ve got a super hard schedule so we’ve got to win as many games like this as we can.”
