PREP WRESTLING: Eagle Point fends off North
EAGLE POINT — The trio of Tygren Lopez, Luke Callahan and Jimmie Copeland all secured key wins and led Eagle Point to a 45-31 dual win over Class 6A North Medford on Wednesday night.
“Our kids performed well,” Eagle Point head coach Kacey McNulty said. “We need to get in better shape, but the kids performed well overall. We got pins where we needed them, and North has some very talented kids on their team, so we were able to squeak by. There were a lot of great performances from the kids who won, and the kids who lost just kept battling.”
Lopez, who captured a Class 5A state title last June at the 113-pound level as a freshman, has moved up to the 126-pound class this season. He recorded a pin over Calvin Chan in 1 minute, 57 seconds.
Callahan, wrestling at 132 pounds, pinned North’s Owen Gutches in 1:24 to get the win.
At the 195-pound level, Copeland also scored a win via pinfall, beating Conner McDougall in 3:48.
“I thought that they picked up where they left off last year,” McNulty said of the Eagles’ leading trio. “All of them wrestled well and they’re firing on all cylinders. There’s spots to work on, but it’s early in the year and they looked pretty formidable.”
North’s first win of the night came via Sadie Hall in the 106-pound class, as she pinned Izzy Halstead in 2:28.
Hall was one of two individual championships in the girls bracket of the Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Tournament in Oregon City this past weekend. The North girls also took the tournament’s team title.
Two other North wrestlers who had success in Oregon City last weekend, Jace Garibay and Sam Miller, picked up wins Wednesday. Garibay was fourth and Miller was fifth at 145 pounds last weekend, but Garibay moved up to 152 against the Eagles and scored a 19-4 technical fall over David Brown.
Eagle Point heavyweight Garrett Matthews wrapped up the night with a pin over North’s Robert Caster in 2:18 just after North Medford’s William Anderson had scored a strong fall over Marc Milazzo in 4:46.
“We got a good performance from our sophomore heavyweight,” McNulty said of Matthews. “It was a good win for him.”
