PREP ROUNDUP: Crater’s Gorze takes sixth at nationals

SAN DIEGO — Crater junior Tyrone Gorze capped an impressive fall cross-country season with a sixth-place finish at the Eastbay Cross-Country Championships (ECCC) National Finals on Saturday morning.

Gorze, who captured the Class 5A individual state title and led the Comets to the overall team title, ran the 5,000-meter course at Balboa Park in 15 minutes, 26.4 seconds, hanging with the top pack of six runners for virtually the entire race.

Seven days earlier, Gorze won the ECCC West Regional in Walnut, Calif.

South Medford senior Michael Maiorano, who placed fourth in the West regional, finished in 12th place Saturday with a time of 15:33.7.

Riley Hough from Fenton, Mich., won the boys race in 15:11.4 after pulling away in the final 500 meters.

Natalie Cook of Flower Mound, Texas, won the girls title in 17:15, becoming the first Texan to ever win at the event.

Wrestling

NORTH BEND COAST CLASSIC: At North Bend, Crater senior Matthew Bolanos scored the lone championship title for the local contingent with a pin at 152 pounds to help the Comets finish third in the team standings behind Crook County and Roseburg.

Bolanos pinned North Salem’s Owen Reding in 2 minutes, 57 seconds to pace the Comets, who saw Elijah Bayne (120), Ryan McCarty (126) and Ty Havniear (138) place third and Brayden Gray (160) finish fourth.

For his efforts, Bolanos was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

Eagle Point sophomore Tygren Lopez suffered a tough 7-6 loss to Crook County’s Mitch Warren in the finals at 120, while Ashland’s Lindson Turner (126) and North Medford’s William Anderson (220) also placed second after suffering second-round pins in their respective finals.

The Eagles finished seventh after Jimmie Copeland (182) and Garrett Matthews (285) each placed fourth.

North Medford was 11th with 74 points

ASHLAND SWEEPS TRI-MEET: Ashland’s boys and girls teams came out victorious in a meet with Crater and Cascade Christian at the Medford YMCA.

Ashland’s Mary Downs and Sydney Yox each earned a pair of individual victories and Cascade Christian’s Joezie Mitchell scored two wins to highlight the girls meet.

In the boys meet, Crater’s Cameron Lane and Ashland’s Logan Barber each placed first in two individual events.

NEWPORT INVITATIONAL: At Newport, Phoenix freshman Laurelin Jansen placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and senior Sophia Stubblefield added two top-five individual efforts to pace the Pirates to a fifth-place finish in the seven-school event.

Jansen was runner-up in 1 minute, 22.94 seconds and Stubblefield placed third in the 100 back in 1:24.62. Stubblefield earlier was fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:30.84) and Jansen took fifth in the 50 freestyle (32.06), just ahead of teammate Rose Moser (32.31).

Phoenix senior Elwood Hosking led the boys team by placing fourth in the 50 free (26.64) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:14.90) The Pirates finished sixth in the boys team standings.
