Crater advances 7 into GP Winter Kickoff semis

GRANTS PASS — Crater advanced seven wrestlers into the semifinal round at the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff on Friday to continue a solid week of action on the mat for the Comets.

Coming off a third-place showing at the North Bend Coast Classic and runaway dual win over North Medford in the past week, Crater stands second to host Grants Pass entering Saturday’s final rounds of the 17-school tournament.

Elijah Bayne recorded a pair of pins to reach the semifinals at 120 pounds, while Ryan McCarty (126), Ty Havniear (138), Matthew Bolanos (152) and Brayden Gray (160) also pinned their way into the semis for the Comets.

Crater placed two wrestlers into the semifinals at 145, with Ryan Hill scoring a 5-3 decision over Rogue River’s Anthony Isom to earn his spot and Ayden Tazioli scoring a 14-5 major decision over Eagle Point’s Dylan Dahling.

With 78 points, Crater trails only Grants Pass (90) in the team standings, with Illinois Valley (72), Mazama (45) and Philomath (44) rounding out the top 5 teams.

South Medford sits in sixth place with 43 points after Cameron Johnson (113) and Isaack Valdez (160) each recorded quarterfinal pins to reach the semis.

North Medford is in a three-way tie for seventh place with 40 points after Noah Allen (145) and Atreaue Roe (160) each advanced to the semifinals.

Eagle Point wrestlers Diego De La Cruz (113) and Garrett Matthews (285) each moved on to the semifinals, along with Ashland’s Lindson Turner (126) and Alan Helsel (195) and Phoenix wrestlers Marcelo Camargo (170) and Joseph Baynard (220).

For Cascade Christian, Joseph Hutchins won by fall over South Medford’s Kristian Hernandez to reach the semis at 113.
