Local wrestlers fare well at Grants Pass tourney
GRANTS PASS — Ashland, North Medford and Phoenix each landed individual champions Saturday and the Crater Comets finished second in the team standings to highlight action at the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff wrestling tournament.
Ashland’s Lindson Turner worked for a 7-5 decision in overtime against Philomath’s Blake Niemann to claim the championship title at 126 pounds.
North Medford’s Atreaue Roe had a similarly tight match in his final at 160 as he edged Willamette’s Logan McAllister, 3-0.
Joseph Baynard of Phoenix earned his title at 220 with a hard-fought 13-8 decision over Mazama’s Tyson Van Gastel.
Crater saw Ty Havniear (138), Ryan Hill (145) and Matthew Bolanos (152) each finish in second place, while Ryan McCarty (126) and Brayden Gray (160) both placed third to pace the Comets.
Grants Pass won the team title with 180 points, followed by Crater (155), Illinois Valley (139), Mazama (112) and Dayton (90) to round out the top 5.
South Medford’s Cameron Johnson (113) also finished in second place, and the Panthers saw Isaack Valdez place third at 160.
Cascade Christian’s Joseph Hutchins (113) finished third, along with Marcelo Carmargo of Phoenix (170).

GRANTS PASS WINTER KICKOFF: At Grants Pass, North Medford’s Estella Gutches and Isabella Prinslow each turned in championship efforts and the Black Tornado used four other top-3 finishes to claim the team title in the girls wrestling tournament.
Gutches scored a 20-second pin in the semifinals at 120 pounds and then won by injury default in her final match, while Prinslow pinned North Medford teammate Isabella Jaime in 5:47 for the title at 135.
Sadie Hall also placed second for the Tornado in her ongoing battle at 105 with Crater’s Sienna Caruso, who turned the tables with a 4-1 decision in the championship.
North’s Rocio Perez (130) lost 3-1 in the finals to Juliette Wolf of Illinois Valley, while Lalaine Chan was third at 235.
Besides Caruso’s effort, Crater claimed the title at 155 behind three pins from Bailey Grecco and teammate Izzy Slaughter was third at 140.
Eagle Point’s Sage Teixeira was pinned by Zoey Smalley of Douglas in the finals at 170, while fellow Eagle Alixia Hernandez was runner-up at 190.
Rogue River got a pair of third-place outings from Faith Farmer (125) and Lily Jaramillo (190).
North Medford won its third team title of the season with 102 points, followed by Del Norte (80), Crater (65), Fortuna (62) and Siuslaw (62) to round out the top 5. Eagle Point was ninth (26) and Rogue River finished 10th (25).
