GIRLS BASKETBALL: Comets dash past Wilsonville

CORVALLIS — The Crater girls basketball team wanted a fast start against Wilsonville on Wednesday night, and that’s exactly what they got.

Crater limited Wilsonville to just three first-quarter points, setting the defensive tone early and rolling to a 49-26 win in the third-place game of the Spartan Holiday Showcase at Corvallis High School.

“We’ve been starting slow the last few games and it was so important to start fast — especially after (Tuesday night’s 60-42 loss to Willamette),” Crater head coach Scott Dippel said. “We were disappointed with how we played (against Willamette), but we handled Wilsonville’s pressure and pressured them.”

The first and third quarters were the difference-makers for the Comets, who improved to 8-2 with the win.

Sophomore guard Abigail Winslow scored all seven of her points in the opening quarter to help Crater build a 12-3 lead.

After taking a 25-13 lead into the break, the Comets pulled away in the third quarter. Senior guard McKenzie Hirsch scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the third, as the Comets took a 39-17 lead into the final period.

“In that first quarter, Abigail Winslow made some really nice plays in transition,” Dippel said. “Coming into the third quarter, we were still applying pressure, but needed to be better in the halfcourt. We had a great first quarter, came into halftime 25-13 and we were still getting turnovers but not converting. It was important right in that beginning of the third quarter that we were able to execute in the halfcourt.”

Winslow also had five rebounds and four assists in the win.

Crater’s three bigs — Alexa Gugliotta, Chase Weaver and Lydia Traore — combined for 12 blocks against Wilsonville (3-4). Traore had six blocks and pulled down eight rebounds, while Weaver blocked three shots and added five rebounds.
