Tornado boys clamp down on Del Norte
North Medford’s boys basketball team picked right up where it left off last weekend when it stormed to the Lakeridge Invitational title, using a stifling defensive effort to overwhelm Del Norte, 63-28, Thursday night.
The 28 points allowed marked a season best for the Black Tornado (8-1), which was allowing only 48 points per game entering the contest.
“We were really sound defensively today, even more than we have been the last few days coming into games,” said Black Tornado head coach Scott Plankenhorn. “We just really did a good job of keeping things on the perimeter and not letting them get too easy to the rim. I thought we played really sound defense.”
On offense, North Medford was able to spread out minutes and saw a balanced showing with five players scoring at least eight points.
Trey Neff had 11 points and five assists, Bryce Dyer contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Ty Neff had nine points and four assists to lead the way. Connor Goodrich had a strong showing with nine points and O’Shea Miller added eight for North, which led 16-7 after one quarter and 29-17 by halftime.
“That was a good part of it tonight,” Plankenhorn said of the scoring balance. “Obviously we played a lot of guys but the fact that they could put into the basket, too, was important. It was an especially good night for Connor. We ran a couple sets where he got open looks with 3s and it was nice to see him get those and knock them down like he’s shown he can do in practice.”
Ethan Thomas scored six points to lead Del Norte (6-3).
