PREP ROUNDUP: EP, North fare well at Invite

Crater claims Beast in the North title; Locals post top swimming marks

EAGLE POINT — Getting consistent contributions across the board, the top of the Eagle Point Invitational standings had a lot of Rogue Valley flavor to it when the final match was completed Saturday afternoon at Eagle Point High.

Grants Pass finished atop the standings with 369.5 points, getting one individual win and having another three wrestlers finish as runners-up in the 18-team field. Illinois Valley (352), Eagle Point (349.5), North Medford (342) and Ridgeview (338.5) rounded out the top-5 team standings.

“I thought the teams were pretty competitive,” said Eagle Point head coach Kacey McNulty. “We have room for improvement and there were some matches where we were doing really well and competitive, then made mistakes and lost them, so it took us out of the running for the championship.”

“We had a lot of younger kids competing and doing well, they’re just making mistakes,” continued McNulty. “We have some guys out of the lineup that will help us (in the future), so looking forward to getting everybody back to 100% and we’re still in the hunt. We’re a pretty competitive team, so if all we have to do is fix mistakes then we’re in good shape.”

North Medford had three wrestlers post wins in the championship finals. Black Tornado 145-pounder Noah Allen beat Grants Pass’ Tagge Fry in a 12-6 decision, Atreaue Roe (160) pinned Ridgeview’s Owen Lee and William Anderson (196) also won via decision over Riley Jones of Coquille.

Eagle Point crowned two champions as Luke Callahan (120) won via technical fall over Grants Pass’ Robert Miner, while Eagles teammate Garrett Matthews won at 285 pounds with a pin of Willamette’s Alexander Willoughby.

“He’s a sophomore and he’s coming along very well,” said McNulty of Matthews. “I saw him just sticking with the plan. He’s young and in good shape and willing to push it. He pushed it into the third round, tiring his opponent and getting the pin.

“Luke is just technically sound. He’s a senior and just knows how to wrestle. He looked good today.”

Ashland’s Lindon Turner won at 126 with a 12-0 major decision over Mark Astry of Grants Pass for the Grizzlies’ lone championship finals victory.

Wrestling in the boys bracket, North Medford’s Estella Gutches placed fourth at 120 pounds.
