Hot-shooting Rhode, Sheldon topple GP

EUGENE — The Grants Pass girls basketball team saw first-hand Thursday night one of the best long-distance shooting performances in state history.

Sheldon senior guard Paityn Rhode erupted for nine 3-pointers and scored a game-high 28 points to lead Sheldon to a 61-29 win over Grants Pass in the Southwest Conference opener for both schools.

Rhode and the Irish (8-7, 1-0) jumped out to a 15-0 lead over the Cavers after the first quarter. It was in the second quarter where Rhode started to heat up from behind the arc, hitting a trio of 3-pointers to help Sheldon take a 30-16 into the half.

Rhode made five more 3s in the second half, putting her one shy of tying the single-game state record set by Shoni Schimmel of Franklin in 2009 against Tualatin.

Rhode has also made eight 3-pointers in a game earlier this season, a 61-49 win over Westview on Dec. 29.

Grants Pass (6-5, 0-1) was paced by sophomore guard Brooke Anderson, who had 12 points.

Sheldon junior forward Beaux Bruegman also scored in double figures with 11 points.
