PREP ROUNDUP: Bolanos falls short in Reser’s semis

HILLSBORO — Crater senior Matthew Bolanos advanced to the semifinal round at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions before suffering his first loss Friday in the highly anticipated wrestling tournament at Liberty High.

The event pits the state’s top wrestlers — regardless of classification — against one another and has been a fixture in determining weight class hierarchy over the years.

Bolanos gave Comet fans plenty to get excited about Friday, with the fourth-seeded 145-pounder receiving a first-round bye before pinning Clifford Johnson of Dallas in the second round in only 44 seconds.

In the quarterfinals, Bolanos pinned fifth-seeded Elijah Southern of Thurston in 2 minutes, 58 seconds but he couldn’t keep that momentum up against top-seeded Ayden Garver of Newberg. The Tigers senior scored a fall over Bolanos in 3:01 in the semifinals.

Bolanos will look to secure a placing spot in consolation round action today.

Grants Pass senior Dredan Myers was the only other local wrestler to reach the championship semifinals but was pinned by No. 2 seed Brook Byers of Sprague in 1:33.

For Crater, Elijah Bayne (113), Ty Havniear (132), Brayden Gray (160) and Justin Brehm (285) all saw their championship hopes dashed in the quarterfinals.

Crater enters today’s placing rounds 12th in the team standings with 63 points and Grants Pass is 14th with 58.

Class 6A Newberg leads with 245.5 points, followed by a pair of 5A programs in Crescent Valley (192.5) and Thurston (138). 6A Mountain View (127) and Roseburg (109) round out the top-5 teams.
