PREP ROUNDUP: Crater’s Brehm places 4th at Reser’s tourney
HILLSBORO — Crater sophomore Justin Brehm had a strong final day at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions, coming through the consolation bracket to place fourth and lead three Comet placers overall in the elite wrestling tournament at Liberty High Saturday.
Brehm opened his day at 285 with a stunning 6-4 overtime victory against fourth-seeded Thurston senior Keannan Bowditch in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place final, however, Brehm could not maintain momentum and was pinned in 1 minute, 44 seconds by No. 3 seed Wylie Johnson of Culver.
Crater senior Matthew Bolanos (145) and junior Ty Havniear (132) each wound up in fifth place to help the Comets finish 13th overall with 82 points in the 19-team event.
Bolanos, the only Comet to reach the championship semifinal round, suffered a 7-1 loss to Mountain View’s Jackson Potts in his first consolation bracket match. Bolanos went on to win the fifth-place final by injury default over Thurston’s Elijah Southern, who he pinned in Friday’s quarterfinals.
Havniear was turned back in the consolation semifinals on a 9-1 major decision by Mountain View’s Drew Jones but responded with a 3-1 decision in the fifth-place final over Isaac Jones of Dallas.
Ryan Johnston (160) and Dredan Myers (182) each placed third to lead Grants Pass, which finished 14th overall with 80 points.
Newberg ran away with the team title after scoring 287.5 points, followed by Crescent Valley (241.5), Thurston (173), Mountain View (145) and Roseburg (134) to round out the top-5 teams.
