BOYS BASKETBALL: Howell helps boost South to victory
South Medford freshman Boden Howell poured in 26 points and Devon Malcolm added 18 points with a few dunks mixed in as the eighth-ranked Panthers boys basketball team used some key surges to post an 82-65 Southwest Conference win Tuesday.
Malcolm scored five points, Jackson Weiland had a driving basket and Drew Hall knocked down a 3-pointer to get the Panthers off to a 10-1 lead that grew to 15-1.
Roseburg closed to 19-13 before a 14-0 answering run by South Medford restored order for the Panthers (13-2, 3-0 SWC), who went on to outscore the Indians (4-10, 1-2) 21-12 in the third quarter to settle the outcome.
Weiland finished with 12 points and Hall had 10 for South, which next plays host to North Medford in a battle of SWC leaders at 6:45 p.m. Friday.
Danil Olson scored 16 points and Mykah Mendoza had 15 for Roseburg.

CRATER 65, NORTH EUGENE 47: At Central Point, senior guard Colton Vranes scored nine of his 21 points in the first quarter to help Crater end a three-game losing streak with the Midwestern League victory over North Eugene.
Javon Smith also dropped in nine of his 14 points in the opening period, helping the Comets (14-4, 6-3 MWL) begin the game quick after enduring slow starts over their last three loses.
Vranes also made four of the Comets’ eight 3-pointers, while brothers Logan and Kaden Price chipped in eight points apiece.
The Highlanders (5-10, 2-6) were led by Bedford Stephens’ 11 points.
