PREP ROUNDUP: Red-hot Reece leads Challengers’ rout

SUTHERLIN — Cascade Christian senior Cody Reece continued his scoring tear and the Challengers had little trouble dispatching Sutherlin, 54-34, in Far West League boys basketball Wednesday.

Reece scored 20 points and added five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Wednesday marked the fourth straight game the 5-foot-10 point guard has scored at least 20 points for the second-ranked Challengers (13-4, 5-0 FWL).

Sophomore Austin Maurer chimed in with 23 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals for Cascade Christian, which opened a 12-4 lead through one quarter and outscored Sutherlin in every frame thereafter.

Triston Wallace added six points and three rebounds while Peyton Maurer had four rebounds, three assists and two steals for Cascade.

The Challengers are next scheduled to play at Brookings-Harbor on Friday in a battle of league leaders but that game was put into question Wednesday night due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Bruins program.

Paul Cervantes scored 10 points to lead the Bulldogs (2-16, 0-5).

ST. MARY’S POSTPONED: The St. Mary’s boys basketball game against Brookings-Harbor was postponed as a result of COVID-19 issues within the Bruins program.

St. Mary’s (5-10, 1-3 FWL) was informed Wednesday afternoon of the situation and could try to reschedule the game as early as next week.

As of press time Wednesday night, Brookings-Harbor (11-5, 3-1) was still scheduled to host No. 2-ranked Cascade Christian (13-4, 5-0) on Friday.

PHOENIX 58, HIDDEN VALLEY 34: At Phoenix, sophomore Dylan Harper scored 21 points to lead Phoenix to a Skyline Conference win over Hidden Valley late Tuesday night.

Harper was the lone player to score in double figures for Phoenix (7-10, 2-2 Skyline), which outscored Hidden Valley 18-7 in the third quarter to pull away. A trio of Pirates — Jenner Selden, Jackson Selden and Julius Bolstad — all chipped in eight points.

Zach Alderman scored 10 for Hidden Valley (3-10, 1-2).

BROOKINGS-HARBOR 50, ST. MARY’S 30: St. Mary’s senior Ryker Rothfus scored 23 points but visiting Brookings-Harbor was dominant on the boards and used a 13-4 edge in the third quarter to pull away for the Far West League victory.

Zoe Carlson scored 20 points and Ashlyn Schofield added 17 to lead the Bruins (9-7, 3-0 FWL) over the Crusaders (3-7, 2-3), who were coming off a big win over Cascade Christian.

SUTHERLIN 51, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 24: At Sutherlin, Cascade Christian struggled to get its offense going on a consistent basis in a Far West League loss to No. 2-ranked Sutherlin.

Junior Micah Wicks outscored Cascade Christian on her own with 26 points to lead Sutherlin (17-1, 4-0 FWL), which has won seven straight.

The Challengers (5-12, 0-4) got eight points apiece from freshman Jordynn Jones and sophomore Timnah Roberson but trailed 24-10 at the half and scored double digits in only one quarter.

EAGLE POINT 58, SOUTH MEDFORD 24: At Eagle Point, Kenai Copeland scored a 12-4 major decision win for Eagle Point over Kaden Miller at 145 pounds in the only matchup of the night that didn’t end in a pin or a forfeit.

Kristian Hernandez (106), Carson Terry (132), Isaack Valdez (152) and Jayden Solis (285) each scored falls for South Medford but otherwise it was the Eagles’ night as the host squad countered with seven pins of their own to go with a pair of forfeit victories.

Robert Howes (126) picked up a key pin for EP against Brayden Ostvik, while Marc Milazzo (220) did likewise in a prime match against South’s Li Moala.
