PREP ROUNDUP: Strong finish lifts North over South

North Medford closed strong with seven wins in the final eight weight classes to rally past South Medford, 40-33, in Southwest Conference wrestling Tuesday in the Panthers’ gym.

South Medford led 27-4 after six matches, but after that it was almost all Black Tornado, punctuated by a match-deciding pin from heavyweight Kael Brown.

After North Medford took its first lead at 34-27 following back-to-back forfeits at 182 and 195 pounds, South Medford sophomore Li Moala pinned Robert Caster in 4 minutes, 45 seconds at 220 to make it 34-33 heading to the final heavyweight match.

Brown made sure that the Black Tornado didn’t let its comeback go for naught, scoring a pin in 1:37 over Jayden Solis at 285 to wrap up the night’s action.

Joseph Borraggine got North off to a strong start with a 12-1 major decision over Kristian Hernandez at 106, but after that, the Panthers built momentum on pins by Cameron Johnson (113), Brayden Ostvik (126) and Carson Terry (132).

Adin Kaufmann’s 5-4 decision over Hayden Allensis kept things going for South but the Tornado turned the tide in the middle weights with its top performers. Noah Allen (145), Jace Garibay (152), Atreaue Roe (160) and Conner McDougall (170) all scored wins to rally North.

Garibay’s win was by virtue of an intense 13-10 decision over Isaack Valdez, while McDougall edged Caleb Dalke, 3-1, with a sudden-victory decision in overtime.
