PREP BASKETBALL: Challengers romp to FWL title

Cascade Christian has enjoyed some solid defensive contributions, but Wednesday night was the best so far as the No. 4-ranked Challengers dominated on their home court.

Cascade Christian limited Sutherlin to single-digit scoring in each quarter and sophomore Austin Maurer contributed 22 points, six rebounds and two blocks to help the Challengers wrap up the Far West League regular-season title with a 61-24 victory.

The 24 points allowed are the lowest this season for Cascade Christian (18-5, 8-1 FWL), which limited Oakland to 26 points this past Saturday and Klamath Union to 27 in December.

Peyton Maurer added eight points, two assists and two steals and Cody Reece had seven points, five assists and four steals for the Challengers, while Kellan Kleker also scored eight points in the runaway win.

Paul Cervantes led Sutherlin (2-20, 0-9) with six points.

Cascade Christian wraps up regular season play at 5:30 p.m. Friday in a road match at St. Mary’s High.

BROOKINGS-HARBOR 52, ST. MARY’S 47: At Brookings, St. Mary’s junior Kayden Walker scored 20 points and Eli Haynes added 13 but the Crusaders couldn’t overcome Brookings-Harbor in a battle of teams tied for second in the Far West League.

The Crusaders dropped to 9-11 overall and 5-4 in FWL play heading into Friday’s clash with crosstown rival Cascade Christian.

Brad Russell scored 21 points to lead Brookings-Harbor (14-7, 6-3).

BROOKINGS-HARBOR 38, ST. MARY’S 28: At Brookings, St. Mary’s sophomore Maddie Ward scored 12 points but the Crusaders were unable to get their offense going consistently in the Far West League loss.

Senior Ryker Rothfus added eight points for the Crusaders, who fell to 4-10 overall and 3-6 in the FWL.

Brookings-Harbor (12-10, 6-3 FWL), which led 25-16 at the half, got 12 points from Zoe Carlson and 10 from Ashlyn Schofield.

SUTHERLIN 54, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 26: Second-ranked Sutherlin used a dominant first quarter to get ahead early and clinch the Far West League regular-season title.

Sutherlin (22-1, 9-0 FWL) led 26-3 after the first quarter and was in control at the half, leading 38-14.

Cascade Christian (5-18, 0-9) got a team-high 11 points from sophomore Timnah Roberson.

Sutherlin’s Micah Wicks led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points.
