South Medford’s Moala places fifth at state

SANDY — South Medford sophomore Li Moala capped a breakout season with a fifth-place finish Sunday at the Class 6A wrestling state championships at Sandy High School.

After earning the Panthers’ first district championship since 2014 last week, Moala advanced as far as the championship quarterfinals at 220 pounds before suffering his first tournament loss on a 57-second pin by top-seeded Sprague senior David Sherman, who went on to win the weight class.

Moala extended his tourney experience Sunday with pins of South Salem’s Braydan Shelton (3 minutes, 55 seconds) and Grant’s William Hindrum (4:42) but suffered a fall in 3:19 to McKay’s Juan Chavez in the consolation semifinals.

Moala rebounded to pin Mountain View’s Alex Garcia-Ortega in 5:08 in the fifth-place final to cap his season with a 22-8 record.

North Medford senior Atreaue Roe also had his championship bracket run halted in the quarterfinals Sunday after an 11-3 major decision by top-seeded Newberg senior Price Pothier, who went on to win the title at 160.

In his first consolation bracket match, Roe suffered a 10-1 major decision loss to Century’s William Musser to end his tournament run.

North Medford’s Joseph Borraggine (106) and Jace Garibay (145) also missed out on the placing rounds after consolation losses Sunday.

For Grants Pass, which finished 11th in the team standings, Dredan Myers placed third at 182 and Owen Hull was sixth at 132.

Myers earned a 6-4 decision over West Linn’s Benjamin Winjum in the third-place final, while Hull was pinned at the end of the first period in the fifth-place final by Tigard’s Cade McCallister.

With a whopping six state champions and five runners-up, Newberg cruised to the 6A team title with 418 points, followed by Sprague (220.5). Roseburg and West Linn tied for third with 163 points apiece.
