Local volleyball, hockey teams win tourney titles
Spiketown Volleyball qualifies for nationals
The Spiketown Volleyball Club, made up of all Rogue Valley girls, won the Salt Lake City Showdown this past weekend to qualify for the USVA Girls 18U National Championships slated April 22-24 in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Spiketown group went undefeated over three days, losing only one set the entire weekend, to dominate the 18U American Division. Spiketown went 10-0 in matches and 20-1 in overall sets, with 10 players representing seven different Rogue Valley schools.
Leading the charge for Spiketown were Ashland’s Cameron Christian; Crater’s Kendra Bittle, Maddie Kocina and Kate Stidham; Eagle Point’s Lily Bixler; North Medford’s Makayla Miller; South Medford’s Katie Clevenger and Emily Fliegel; Rogue Valley Adventist’s Emma Bischoff; and Kelsey Dunn of St. Mary’s.
Spiketown is coached by Christine Nelson.
Southern Oregon wins 18U state hockey title
The Southern Oregon Selects, an 18U travel hockey team based in Medford, posted a 3-1 record over three days to claim the championship at the Oregon State Hockey Association championships Sunday in Eugene.
The group is comprised of local players age 15-18 from Ashland, Cascade Christian, Crater, North Medford, South Medford, St. Mary’s high schools and the Medford Online Academy.
The Southern Oregon Selects, coached by Bobby Ruddle, were put together during the pandemic to help get the players back on the ice and boast a 32-5-4 record.
Southern Oregon began the tournament with a 7-1 win over host Eugene last Friday, then returned Saturday and lost 3-2 to Klamath Falls before securing a spot in the championship final later that night with a 5-0 win over Portland.
In the title match against Eugene, the Selects earned a 5-2 triumph Sunday.
