Southern Oregon wins 18U state hockey title

The Southern Oregon Selects, an 18U travel hockey team based in Medford, posted a 3-1 record over three days to claim the championship at the Oregon State Hockey Association championships Sunday in Eugene.

The group is comprised of local players age 15-18 from Ashland, Cascade Christian, Crater, North Medford, South Medford, St. Mary’s high schools and the Medford Online Academy.

The Southern Oregon Selects, coached by Bobby Ruddle, were put together during the pandemic to help get the players back on the ice and boast a 32-5-4 record.

Southern Oregon began the tournament with a 7-1 win over host Eugene last Friday, then returned Saturday and lost 3-2 to Klamath Falls before securing a spot in the championship final later that night with a 5-0 win over Portland.

In the title match against Eugene, the Selects earned a 5-2 triumph Sunday.
