PREP BASEBALL: North settles for split in Pendleton

PENDLETON — North Medford junior Aiden Horsley made a strong first impression in his 2022 debut on the hill, leading North Medford to an 11-3 romp over Class 5A The Dalles to open Tuesday action at the Pendleton Tournament.

North (3-1) dropped its second game of the day, however, 11-5 to Scappoose.

Horsley threw a six-inning complete game against The Dalles, scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs with nine strikeouts and two walks.

“He threw really well,” said North Medford coach Kerry Curtis. “His changeup was pretty awesome today.”

The Black Tornado held a 3-0 lead until breaking it open with a six-run fourth inning. Colton Morgan started things off with an RBI single before Aidan Becksted had a two-run single to make it 7-0. Horsley and batterymate Jeremiah Robbins capped the big inning with an RBI double apiece.

Horsley went 3-for-5 against The Dalles and was one of three North players — Robbins and Becksted being the others — to drive in a pair of runs. Trey Newmann went 2-for-4.

“We were just waiting (for the offense) to get going,” said Curtis. “We had seven hits in that sixth inning and it was nice that our bats finally came alive and had some runs.”

Scappoose (3-0) was able to jump on North starter Frankie Rutigliano and score six runs in the first to build a cushion.

The Black Tornado managed just two hits in Game 2 — one by Horsley and a two-run single in the top of the seventh by Kellen Willer.

“They just came out swinging the bats,” said Curtis of Scappoose. “They just put the ball in play and hit the ball really hard.”
