PREP SOFTBALL: Heiken lifts Ashland over Knights

ASHLAND — Ashland senior Gabby Heiken finished a single short of the cycle to lead a Grizzlies offense that finished with 13 hits in a 16-6 win over Class 4A North Valley in six innings Tuesday evening at North Mountain Park.

Heiken, who also allowed four hits and struck out six in the circle, finished 3-for-5 with a double, triple, a solo home run and scored three runs.

Heiken’s solo shot, her fourth homer of the season, was part of a three-run bottom of the first for Ashland (7-3), which took the lead on Ivy Clason’s RBI triple. Clason then scored on a passed ball before Heiken’s home run.

The Grizzlies pushed their lead to 7-0 an inning later, as Shelby Brown recorded an RBI single before Ashland took advantage of multiple North Valley (1-8) errors.

PHOENIX 38, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 8, 5 inn.: Jayden Vos was one of five players to drive in four runs or more for Phoenix in a runaway nonconference win at Lithia & Driveway Fields.

Vos finished 3-for-4 with six RBIs and four runs scored while Raelyssa Goff, Addison Brite, Lexi Dial and Paityn Croy all had two hits and four RBIs for the Pirates (2-6).

While the offensive production was there for the Challengers (0-10), the defense committed 11 errors and the Pirates took advantage. Instead of ending the game after three innings because of the 15-run mercy rule, both teams agreed to play to a time limit, which allowed for a five-inning game.

Cascade Christian’s Callie Sweem and Maile Scaglione each went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs apiece. Sweem hit a pair of triples and Scaglione had a double.
