PREP ROUNDUP: Hammericksen cards 70 to win Phoenix tourney

St. Mary’s senior Riley Hammericksen posted a 70 to earn medalist honors in the girls golf portion of the 17th annual Phoenix Invitational to lead a dominant effort by the Crusaders at Centennial Golf Club on Monday.

St. Mary’s posted the three top marks in the girls tournament to win the team title, with Brigitte O’Connell finishing second with an 85 and Chelsea Horn tying for third place after carding a 95 under ideal conditions.

Hammericksen opened with a 34 on the front nine and came home in 36 to win the individual competition by 15 strokes.

Ruby Rector finished with a 101 to pace host Phoenix, while Maile Oliver posted a 104 to lead Crater.

In the boys golf tournament, St. Mary’s junior Brock Drury fell three shots off the pace set by Lucas Vanderlip of Brookings-Harbor to finish runner-up with a 73. Drury scored a 34 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine to secure yet another strong showing this season.

With Josh Moran posting a 77 and the Crusaders getting rounds of 78 from Tiger Kao and Elliot Zimmer, St. Mary’s was able to fend off Crater in a tight race for the boys team title. The Class 3A/2A/1A Crusaders finished with a 306 team score, seven shots ahead of the 5A Comets. Both programs expect to challenge for their respective state championship titles later this spring.

Ben Idiart carded a 75 and Marcus Idiart scored a 76 to lead Crater, with Tucker Laws coming in with a 78 and Tate Broesder posting an 84.

Gavin Snow finished with an 83 to pace Rogue River, while Gavin Ulrich led Cascade Christian with a 98 and Reif Stanfield scored a 93 to set the tone for Phoenix.

Boys Golf

ALL-SWC: At Creswell, South Medford’s Max Woolf scored a 77 to lead the Panthers to a second-place showing at Emerald Valley Golf Club.

Panthers teammate Kyle Reed came in with a 79 to help the Panthers score a 325 team total, 16 strokes behind Grants Pass and one shot ahead of third-place Sheldon.

Oliver Ausland of Grants Pass earned medalist honors with a 69 — one shot ahead of runner-up Owen Davis-Piger of South Eugene — while Messiah Gilbert (73) placed third for the Cavemen.

Andrew Plankenhorn carded an 81 and Trey Neff finished with an 83 to pace North Medford, which finished fourth.

SHELDON 13, GRANTS PASS 0, 5 inn.: At Eugene, Sheldon right-hander Taylor Langworthy tossed a no-hitter to help the Irish shut down Grants Pass for a mercy rule Southwest Conference win.

Langworthy struck out seven and allowed two walks over five innings.

Sheldon (7-8, 3-3 SWC) scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and had five more in the fourth to take control.

The Cavemen dropped to 9-6 overall and to 4-2 in SWC play.

Softball

CRATER 8, HENLEY 2: At Klamath Falls, Maddie Sheadel belted a home run and Kaylee Lundeen was solid from the pitcher’s circle, powering Crater to its sixth straight win while snapping host Henley’s six-game winning streak.

With the score deadlocked at 2-all in the top of the fourth inning, the Comets’ Lilli Reid smacked one of her two run-scoring doubles to give Crater the lead for good.

In the fifth inning, Sheadel’s solo homer — her first of the season — extended Crater’s advantage to 4-2.

Lundeen struck out four over five innings and allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits and three walks

Sheadel, Reid, Sophia Van Wey, Taylor Kenworthy, McKenna Sease and Kaylynn Wolchock each had two hits for the Comets (13-4). Van Wey drove in two runs and Kenworthy scored twice.

HIDDEN VALLEY 13, ASHLAND 7: At Ashland, after Ashland rallied from a five-run deficit to take the lead, Hidden Valley staged a comeback of its own and upended the Grizzlies in a nonleague contest at North Mountain Park.

Thanks to back-to-back home runs by Gabby Heiken and Glory Pistole, the Grizzlies (10-7) rolled up six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab a 7-6 edge.

The Mustangs (3-10), however, reclaimed the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth and put the game away with five more in the seventh.

The Grizzlies committed eight errors in the game while the Mustangs also struggled defensively with five miscues.

Heiken’s fifth homer of the season drove home two while Pistole’s was a solo shot and her third of the campaign. Both finished with a pair of hits, as did Ivy Clason, who also scored a run.

Sam Sykes and Elijah Spencer earned a triumph at No. 1 singles after edging Parker Pastrell and Noah Horban of Grants Pass, 6-3, 6-2.
