PREP SOFTBALL: Ashland dominates for MWL sweep
ASHLAND — Nearly perfect inside the pitching circle and on defense, Ashland balanced those efforts with a powerful day at the plate to secure a pair of 15-0, four-inning wins over Springfield at North Mountain Park on Saturday.
The host Grizzlies blasted five home runs in the Midwestern League doubleheader and didn’t allow a hit, with Glory Pistole pitching two innings and Gabby Heiken pitching two innings in the opener before Pistole handled all four innings in Game 2.
The only blemishes of the sweep for Ashland (13-7, 8-4 MWL) involved a walk in Game 1 by Pistole and an error in Game 2.
“We had one error and one walk on the day, that’s not bad,” said Ashland coach Bobby Heiken, whose team moved into third place in the MWL with Eagle Point.
Gabby Heiken had a three-run home run in the first inning and walk-off RBI single to finish 3-for-5 with five RBIs in the opener, while Shelby Brown belted a two-run homer in the first and went 2-for-3 with four runs and three RBIs.
Kate Theobald and Mary Montgomery each added two hits against the Millers (0-16, 0-10).
In Game 2, Pistole struck out eight — giving her 12 in the twin bill — and connected for a two-run home run in the third.
Theobald had a leadoff homer in the fourth and Brown supplied a walk-off two-run HR later in the inning to join Heiken with six homers this spring.
Brown finished 3-for-3, while Ivy Clason and Heiken each went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
