South’s Walker sets pace at GP Invitational

GRANTS PASS — Limited rest in between meets didn’t slow down South Medford star sprinter Andrew Walker on Saturday.

After competing — and winning — at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays Friday evening, Walker made his way back to the Rogue Valley and, a lot like in Portland the day before, Walker made his presence known at the 72nd annual Grants Pass Rotary Invitational, winning the boys 100- and 200-meter sprints Saturday afternoon.

“He basically went for a cool down, stretched and then drove back down last night,” South head coach David Kirkpatrick said of Walker. “He didn’t get back until one or two in the morning and then was back at the track at 9 a.m. this morning. That’s pretty amazing, but today also was good practice for state when he has to run in prelims and then goes back to run in finals.”

Walker won the 100 in a time of 10.84 seconds, then took home the win in the 200 in 21.51 by edging out St. Mary’s senior Gavin Cougle (21.91) and North Medford senior Nathan Rider (21.99).

“It was a pretty significant headwind and rainy conditions,” said Kirkpatrick, noting how weather conditions played into Saturday’s times.

Cougle, who has consistently found himself matched up with Walker and/or Rider this season, was third in the 100 with a time of 11.09, just behind Roseburg’s Landyn Dupper.

Rider, who also competed in Portland on Friday, got the win in the 400 with a time of 50.04, his second-fastest mark this season.

The efforts by Walker — who also was part of South’s 4x100 relay team that finished second behind Roseburg — helped lead the charge for the Panther boys, who finished just ahead of host Grants Pass to take home the team title with 87 points. The Cavemen finished second with 845 points, while Crater was third with 63.

South’s other win on the boys side came in the 3,000, with Connor Singer finishing one second ahead of South Eugene’s Jackson Seubert with a personal-record time of 8:49.50. Singer’s teammate Adam Cannon finished third in 8:54.18, also a personal record.

“The boys 3,000 started us off strong,” Kirkpatrick said. “We got a total team performance today. We have a lot of talent and everything clicked, everything happened at the same time for us. We had a lot of PRs or kids close to PRs today.”

Crater picked up a pair of wins in the 800 and 1,500 courtesy of the respective efforts from Jeffrey Hellman (1:57.83) and Tyrone Gorze (3:55.91), who was another local runner making the quick turnaround after running in Portland the day before.

Ashland’s lone win came in the boys 4x400 relay, with the Grizzlies’ time of 3:31.41 edging out rival Crater by a second and a half.

David Fuiava was North Medford’s lone winner with his throw of 143 feet, 4 inches in the discus.

On the girls side, Grants Pass won the team title with 123 points, well ahead of second-place South Eugene (83) and third-place Sheldon (59).

Crater’s Clara Bennett’s cleared 5-2 to claim the girls high jump, while Mackenzie Walker of St. Mary’s won the pole vault (12-0).
