Comets trip up Black Tornado

CENTRAL POINT — Maddie Sheadel blasted a two-run homer to spark a five-run outburst in the third inning for Crater and propelled the fourth-ranked Comets to a 10-6 win over North Medford Wednesday evening.

Crater (19-6) outhit North Medford 12-9, getting two hits apiece from five different players — Kailee Davis (2-for-4), Alyssa Kilbane (2-for-4), Sophia Van Wey (2-for-3), Payton Schwab (2-for-4) and Abigal Foster (2-for-3). Sheadel and Kilbane both finished with two RBIs, while Van Wey, Schwab and Foster each drove in a run.

Van Wey and Foster each had a double against North (12-14), which played its regular-season finale Wednesday and will learn who it faces when the Class 6A bracket are released later this week.

North was ranked 20th in the OSAA power rankings Wednesday night.

Comets starting pitcher Alexis Perez improved her record to 7-3 on the season with a complete-game effort, allowing nine hits with one of the six runs charged to her being earned. She struck out three, walked two and hit a batter.

The Black Tornado, who led 2-1 before the Comets scored five in the third, saw Samara Miles finish 3-for-4, Gabbi Urban go 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Anna Gates drive in a pair of runs.

Crater, which clinched the Midwestern League title last week, closes out the regular season with a pair of games against Ashland, one each today and Friday.
