PREP TENNIS: North’s Milligan splits state openers
BEAVERTON — North Medford senior Molly Milligan scored the lone local victory Thursday but was unable to extend her stay thereafter as the Class 6A girls tennis and boys tennis state championships got underway at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
One of North Medford’s valedictorians — and a year early graduate at that as a 16-year-old senior — Milligan opened her state tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 singles victory over Century sophomore Sariah Blaisted.
The Southwest Conference runner-up then advanced to a matchup with second-seeded Neena Feldman in the second round, where the Westview junior scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Milligan to end her tournament run.
In the 6A boys tournament, South Medford junior Stephen Wisnovsky — the SWC boys runner-up — and senior Josue Madiana each dropped their opening matches to fall into the consolation bracket, which opens elimination play Friday.
Maidana lost 6-1, 6-3 to Southridge sophomore Vitomir Petcov, while Wisnovsky fell 7-6 (5), 6-1 to Summit sophomore Max Himstreet.
The Class 5A state tournaments begin Friday at the Portland Tennis Center, with Ashland seniors and MWL champions Mina Schepmann and Ian Bower opening as the No. 2 seed in boys doubles. The Grizzly girls will be represented by freshman Veronica Miller in singles, who was the Midwestern League champion, and the duo of Sofia Shelton and Talia Vivrett in doubles.
In Friday’s 4A/3A/2A/1A tournaments at the Oregon State Tennis Complex in Corvallis, St. Mary’s freshman Titus Stark-Seymour and sophomore Sunga Kim will compete in boys and girls singles, respectively.
In boys doubles, Jackson Lopiano and Calvin Chmelir will compete for St. Mary’s and the Crusaders boast the second-seeded girls doubles team in Hannah Poisson and Pratheeka Weerakoon.
