PREP TENNIS: St. Mary’s duo takes second at state

CORVALLIS — After cruising through the opening day of the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state girls tennis tournament, the St. Mary’s doubles tandem of Pratheeka Weerakoon and Hannah Poisson picked up right where they left off with another convincing victory in Saturday’s semifinals.

But in the championship match, the tournament’s No. 2-seeded pair ran into No. 4-seeded Marin Roseman and Sophia Dube of Oregon Episcopal, who were able to earn the upset over Weerakoon and Poisson as the two Crusaders settled with a state runner-up finish at the Oregon State Tennis Complex.

Roseman and Dube became state champs with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Weerakoon and Poisson. In the semifinals, the sophomore Weerakoon and senior Poisson defeated the No. 3 seed Brenda Ramirez and Elsie Seals of Vale, 6-1, 6-4.

At the Class 5A level, Ashland freshman Veronica Miller lost in the semifinals to No. 1 seed Kennedy Harris of La Salle prep, but responded in the third-place match with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Pendleton’s Olivia Corbett.

Harris, also a freshman, topped Miller, 7-5, 6-0, in the semifinals before becoming state champion with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Crescent Valley’s Sophie Katz.

In 5A boys doubles, Ashland’s No. 2-seeded duo of Mina Schepmann and Ian Bower picked up an 8-6 victory over Ryder McCoy-Hansen and Harris Nguyen in the consolation semifinals before being upended by Cresent Valley’s Henry Pappas and Bryan Chen, 6-4, 6-3, in the consolation finals.

For the 6A girls, after defeating Lake Oswego’s Emma Chang 8-4 in the consolation semifinals, Allie Rist of Grants Pass fell shy to Grant’s Marina Seidl in the consolation finals in a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 decision.

In 6A boys singles, South Medford’s Josue Maidana was derailed by Lincoln’s Freddie Kemple, 8-5, in the consolation semifinals.
