South’s Sewell shares top SWC honor

South Medford junior earns pitching recognition to lead bevy of local honorees

Two of the finest seasons in South Medford baseball and softball history this spring resulted in a host of recent honors for the Panthers in all-conference voting by the Southwest Conference coaches.

South Medford junior Cameron Sewell shared SWC baseball pitcher of the year recognition, while Panther coaches Josh Moody and Shane Ramsay were each awarded SWC coach of the year honors in baseball and softball, respectively.

“This was a very memorable group,” Moody said of his baseball team Wednesday, echoing sentiments shared earlier in the week by Ramsay of his crew. “It was a really fun year.”

The South Medford baseball team posted the third 20-win campaign in school history, finishing 23-4 after earning the outright SWC title.

In softball, the Panthers secured a share of their first conference title in 19 years and were 22-5 overall despite fielding one of the youngest lineups in the conference.

Sewell finished conference play 4-0 with two saves, logging 25 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run — and one overall — with 20 strikeouts against seven hits and five walks allowed. The right-handed pitcher entered the state playoffs 4-0 with six saves and a 0.00 ERA.

Sewell also proved to be on the Panthers’ leading hitters, batting .432 with 30 runs and 21 RBIs as they wrapped up the regular season.

Joining Sewell on the all-SWC baseball first team were teammates Carson Joe and Tanner Douglas as pitchers, Jace Miller as an infielder and Tosh Stupenhaus as an outfielder.

Joe capped his senior year with a 6-2 record with one save and a 4.23 ERA, while fellow senior Douglas went 8-1 with a 3.81 ERA. Both Panthers logged 49 2/3 innings on the mound to anchor the starting rotation, with Douglas also batting .449 with 28 runs and 26 RBIs despite drawing 26 walks — 18 in league play alone — while Joe hit .269 with 14 runs and 21 RBIs.

Miller, also a senior, posted a .356 batting average with 19 runs and 14 RBIs and the junior Stupenhaus hit .327 overall with 15 runs and eight RBIs.

North Medford junior outfielder Aiden Horsley and sophomore infielder Frankie Rutigliano also earned first-team all-SWC recognition in baseball.

Horsley boasted a .500 batting average with 19 runs and 19 RBIs and Rutigliano hit .307 with 19 runs and 23 RBIs for the Black Tornado.

Sheldon infielder Taylor Langworthy was named SWC baseball player of the year and Roseburg junior Austin Takahashi shared SWC pitching honors with Sewell.

On the softball diamond, South Medford and North Medford were each able to garner a pair of first-team nods after voting by the coaches.

South Medford sophomore Kacee Hudson was one of two pitchers honored after posting a 5-1 record in SWC play with a 0.98 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. Hudson also hit .434 for the Panthers with 19 runs and five RBIs in conference play.

Panthers junior shortstop Kirsten Morgan was one of five infielders recognized on the first team after batting .388 in league with 11 runs and 17 RBIs.

For North Medford, junior outfielder Samara Miles and sophomore catcher Presley Lawton were also selected to the first team after their own pivotal performances.

Miles led the Black Tornado with a .518 batting average to go with a team-high 22 runs and 12 RBIs in 18 games played.

In 13 games, Lawton was able to produce nine RBIs and a .289 batting average for North.

Grants Pass junior infielder Alexa Medley was named SWC softball player of the year, while Sheldon sophomore Payton Burnham was selected SWC softball pitcher of the year.
