PREP SOCCER: St. Mary’s nets 5th straight victory
Konrad Aretz and the St. Mary’s boys soccer team established command in the first 15 minutes and eight different players got in on the scoring act for the Crusaders, who captured their fifth straight win with a 9-1 3A/2A/1A District 5 victory over Lakeview at Lithia & Driveway Fields on Monday.
Aretz connected on back-to-back goals at the 10th- and 15th-minute marks to help St. Mary’s (5-1, 5-0 Dist. 5) jump out to a 3-0 lead. Declan Read broke the ice for the Crusaders with a score inside the first several minutes of the contest.
After the first 20 minutes of action, St. Mary’s began to give some of its junior varsity players experience against the Honkers (3-3, 3-2).
The Crusaders had a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
PHOENIX 3, KLAMATH UNION 2: At Klamath Falls, Klamath Union struck first with a goal in the first 10 minutes but Phoenix responded three consecutive scores — two coming off the foot of Danny Palomino — and lassoed the Skyline Conference victory.
The senior Palomino broke a 1-all tie about 10 minutes into the second half with a goal on an assist from junior Ethan Martinez. Palomino scored again moments later to put the Pirates (2-4-1, 2-0 Skyline) up 3-1.
Phoenix junior Cielo Marlia-Larsen found the back of the net 15 minutes into the contest and knotted the score at 1-all.
The defeat dropped the Pelicans to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in Skyline action.
KLAMATH UNION 1, PHOENIX 0: At Talent, Phoenix had the upperhand on shot attempts but Klamath Union was able to capitalize on its goal in the 18th minute en route to a Skyline Conference win.
The Pirates (2-5, 0-2 Skyline) outshot the Pelicans (5-2, 1-0) 7-2 in the second half after tying with three apiece prior to halftime.
Sofi Rodriguez helped provide some of the Pirates’ scoring opportunities at midfield while goalkeeper Jayden Vos scooped up four saves.
ST. MARY’S 2, LOST RIVER 0: Junior Emma Meyer found the back of the net in the 11th minute and it was all St. Mary’s would need to take care of business in the 3A/2A/1A District 4 showdown against Lakeview at Lithia & Driveway Fields.
Meyer used a corner kick from freshman Gabriella Cooper to give the early 1-0 advantage to the Crusaders (3-3-1, 3-2-1 Dist. 4), who had nine corner kicks as a team.
The Crusaders’ Bella Mussio deflected home an insurance goal in the 45th minute on another corner kick from Katherine Mejia.
In the middle of the field, Meyer and senior Sadie Glaser helped the Crusaders control possession for the majority of the contest, as did senior Carmel Ashland at the back end.
The loss dropped Lost River to 0-6 overall and in league play.
LAKEVIEW 9, CASCADE CHRSITIAN 1: At Lakeview, senior Autumn Murray knocked home a first-half goal for Cascade Christian but Lakeview was too much for the Challengers in the District 4 matchup.
The Challengers dropped to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in league play, while the Honkers climbed to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in league.
